Escape 19 vs 5.0 TA?

Thanks to all that gave input on my last question. I hope I'm in the right category - introductions.

Now I'm considering a new Escape. Please indulge me with your wisdom and experience. Please compare & contrast the 19 and the 5.0 TA? (both old and new)

The 5.0TA is wider (and of course taller), much bigger kitchen counter. About the only similarities I see are both side-bath models, tandem axles and queen beds.


In the 5.0TA, dinette is in the back, 19' in the front. A 5.0TA has 20' of living space, the 19' has 16' of living space. But nearly the same footprint lengthwise. 90% different interior layout.

Hi: Richard in Georgia... As Donna D's floor plans show the 5.0TA at 20'2" is 99% usable floor space. We like the bed area being more separate.
Travelling with our 30 something daughter I put a spring loaded shower rod and a curtain across the dinette and she has a larger than queen bed.

Richard, for us it was interior room versus overall tow vehicle length plus trailer. We boondock mostly at BLM, state and provincial parks, we can fit into some very small sites. Have fun with the decision making process. Scott

What ever you do, just be sure and visually tour the trailers you are interested in. Seeing them in person is so much different from just looking at spec sheets or pictures. Then you will know that you have it right as to what will work for you. If you are going to spend $35,000, it is cheaper to get it right the first time. We went to Chilliwack set on the 19 and ended up with the 21. The 5.0TA was eliminated because we wanted the pickup box to haul all of our junk. Loren

They both have their good points, it of course depends entirely on you.

19, small enough to pull with a car or a small truck and still have the bed free, both giving you decent mileage. Better mileage, overall a smaller package.

5.0TA, 4" wider, 4' longer, about 3' higher. Bigger dinette, separate (sort of) bedroom, more storage, bigger holding tanks, bigger fridge. A fifth wheel tows nicer.

Please compare & contrast the 19 and the 5.0 TA? (both old and new)

Clarification: the "5.0TA" is the new (current) fifth-wheel; the original (now discontinued) fifth-wheel was just called the "5.0". There is no "old 5.0TA".

• The 5.0TA is wider than the 19; the 5.0 was narrower than the 19.
• The 5.0TA and 19 have tandem axles; the 5.0 had a single axle.
• The 5.0TA has Dexter beam axles with leaf springs connected by a Dexter E-Z Flex cushioned equalizers; the 5.0 and 19 (and all other Escape models) have Dexter Torflex independent rubber-sprung suspension.
• The 19 has a permanent bed in the rear and dinette in front; both 5.0 and 5.0TA has the permanent bed in the front loft and a dinette in the back.

The middle section (kitchen and bath) of all three of these trailers is laid out in the same arrangement, although different in dimensions.
Frame construction, body construction and components, cabinetry, appliances, wheels and tires, and other components are similar between all models.

I had the 19, and am now getting a 5.0TA. The two are very different.

If you don't want to commit to a pickup truck, and many don't for lots of good reasons, then the 19 will fit the bill. It is a fantastic trailer, laid out extremely well for its size. I put my deposit on one before the even hit production, knowing it was the best option for me out there.

The move to the 5.0TA came about for a few reasons. A few were, I like the separation of the bed from the living area as it is in the 19, for extended trips into our future, the added size is nice. But mostly, I want a new trailer to do major modifications to right away, and will have it built accordingly. I have spent a lot of time planning what I will do (Chris R has been very helpful with giving me lots of ideas via email on how to spend more money ;D), and want materials I will do it with. So, it is a project as much as a change of trailers. I am enjoying this planning stage very much, and hopefully the implementation phase will be as much fun.

I just finished washing the new 19 for the first time. As a senior advancing in age I can't imagine how I'd get way up on a ladder and wash n wax a 5.0 TA someday soon. Less is more.....

Just got home from the Matagorda Rally, and I spent alot of time in the 5.0TA. It's really quite different than our 19, so I don't think there's a real comparison. It feels cavernous inside when compared to our 19. If you want ROOM, and you have a pickup, and the means, then the 5.0 TA is just super. We love our 19, and have no plans to change, but the 5er is what I consider the tip top from Escape.

Was just thinking I would miss my front box too . You can get the box with 21 too. I also put lots in my truck bed , most important extra water containers etc. ,if boondocking . There is nothing perfect. Good about all the trailers . Even like the 17 . Best for me , all is paid for , truck and trailer . Money is getting harder to get , the older I get . Figure out what is important to you and go with it . I also am glad I didn't have to wait so long to get my new trailer . 4 month's for me was long enough . Pat

Forgot Karen the 15 's were great trailers too . Escape was still making them then . Guess I went for the 19 for the big bed and the bath was a great size coming from my little one in my camper . I think I like them all . Pat
