Escape 2020 Update

Where ever did you get this number? No way it will weigh anywhere near that much. The shell will be about 20 feet, which is shorter than that of the 5.0TA and the overall frame weight can't be much more than the 5.0TA either, and just add some weight for the extra width and finishing inside that with. I would bet it would top out at 5000 max.

That's a good guess. For comparison an Oliver Legacy Elite II is 23'6" overall with an 18' shell, 7' width and weighs in dry at 4600# with standard equipment. 7000# GVWR. Supposedly Oldtimer spoke to Karl at the Pineknot Rally based on another thread. My guess is this larger number that was quoted is the possible GVWR of the new 23, not dry weight.

I talked to Karl after the meeting on weight and cost of the 23 and that what he was figuring on weight . This figure figures in with it loaded not dry my mistake for not including this in previous post

for smaller trailer comparison, I was at the Lake Casitas rally late October and watched an 18'5" single axle get weighed. the listed dry weight online is 3400, hers weighed 4300 and the tongue weight was 740, roughly 17 %. oh, and it was at least (base price compared to mine with lots of custom) twice as much to buy.

I believe the 40K was Canadian and will probably approach $50K with options. With the current exchange rate $38,000 US but that can go up.

My 2018 - 21 was almost $48,000 CND new . Figuring in the increased size (21 to 23 ft ) and Escape’s recent price increases , I can easily see an Escape 23 being in the $60 K CND price range . I would assume that individuals who can afford a 23 ft Escape and the proper tow vehicle will be purchasing an option heavy trailer .

** What I don’t look forward to with the introduction of the Escape 23 is the hundreds of threads / posts inquiring if anyone has towed the new 23 with a 4 cylinder Yugo and
what kind of mileage are you getting in the mountains ? **

I looked at some new Bigfoot 25s, and they were all over $70,000 dollars, the one we like best, the twin bed one, was $74,000. Too much, too heavy, too big, at least for some years yet.

Looking at the new price differences btwn the 17 and 21 we only have a $7000 CDN increase in price btwn the two. Wouldn't it be reasonable to believe that the new 23ft would be at best 43 to 45 canadian for a base price? Escape has always been about reasonably pricing their units. That was a big selling point for us. Why we went all the way to Canada to purchase. Otherwise I would have waited for the new Casita 21'.

Hi Steve:
I’ve got a good Geo Metro with 107,000 miles on it, do you think it would pull the 23? Hey just kidding. The old joke down here is relative to the pulling power of tractors.
“She will pull a four bottom plow all day.” Then a pause. And the resident detractor says
“Sure it will, till you drop it in the ground!”
Have a great day and keep the snow up there.

With the Bigfoots, keep in mind since they're sold through a dealer the list price is kind of a fiction compared to Escape's actual prices. MSRP might be $70K, but actual price for a 25RQ is probably going to be in the $48-58K range.

The 25RQ we looked at was $56 K . The Bigfoot is in a totally different class of trailers and the price reflects that . We are looking for a trailer with true “3 season capabilities” and if that feature brings with it additional weight , so be it .

We looked at our first Escape, 17B, at an RV show in Chilliwack, (I think it was 2004) Tammy was at the door welcoming everyone in, and it was perfect for what we were looking for. But, at around $13,500 CDN it was a little too "rich" for us at the time. Shower was optional, as were tinted windows but it did have a toilet.

How times have changed!

Yeah, I'm betting that 7500 lb number, if correct, is the trailer GWR, not its curb weight. IMHO, the classic 21 at around 4200 lbs wet, and 4500 lbs GWR, doesn't have enough payload.

7500 lbs GWR definitely puts you in mandatory WDH even with a F250 class truck

The truck's limits only apply to the actual loaded gross trailer weight. If a loaded trailer weighs, for instance, 5000 pounds, then it's a 5000 pound towing load whether the manufacturer approves the trailer for GVW up to 5000 pounds or GVWR up to 7500 pounds.

Regardless of whether the trailer weighs 5,000 pounds or 8,000 pounds, the Ford towing guide says that the weight-carrying (no WD) hitch load capacity of any F-250 or higher is simply 10% of the gross trailer weight allowed, so at least 1,500 pounds, so WDH is not mandatory with these Ford SuperDuty trucks... and presumably not with the similar Chevrolet/GMC or Ram heavy duty pickups. In the Ford list, only the F-150 and lighter vehicles have a higher allowed hitch load with WD than without. A trailer owner might choose to use a WDH anyway, but it's not required.

the Ford Towing Guide for 2002 says to use a WDH for any hitch pulled trailer over 6500 lbs. the max towable trailer is 12500 lbs. as I have the 7.3 turbodiesel, my payload is only 2000 lbs, a gasser would have considerably lighter curb weight with the same 8800 lb GVWR

interestingly, the F350 in 2002 had the same tow ratings, albeit with a higher payload and GVWR
