Escape 5.0 TA Update #2

Great job Reace - It's really the perfect trailer. I'm lucky to have reserved the final 2014 5er. Keep the pictures coming!

Dang!
Really cool looking with the openings cut in.
Would love to see a shot with someone standing next to it for scale...

If I would have a pickup truck, this would be really dangerous... Looks wonderful, and I agree with others here that ETI has once again a WINNER!

Questions.. maybe someone that knows about trailer heights can answer this for me?

Because this is now taller, is that the reason the front/top marker lights were moved from the wall side to the top of the nose?

Just wondering what you say in Canadian when the holes are cut the wrong size or in the wrong place.

According to federal standards, "front clearance lamps" (amber forward-facing lights on each side) are required on any trailer 2032 mm (80") or wider. In the Escape lineup, this means everything larger than the 17' or original 5.0... so the original did not require them, and the 5.0 TA does (as do the 19' and 21').

The requirement is not related to the height, but they are to be placed "as high as practicable", as these are.

The requirement for rear clearance lamps on wide trailers is similar, and so the 19', 21', and now 5.0 TA have them, suitably placed up high.

Front side marker lamps are required on all trailers, regardless of width, height, or length. I don't know why the one I see on the driver's side is at the front of the lower body, and not "as far forward as practicable" up on the nose (like the classic 5.0), since the forward-facing lights would presumably not meet the requirement for side-facing markers. Maybe not all the lights were installed at the time of the photo. A gooseneck trailer would place the lights back there on the full-width body, but the 5.0 continues essentially full-width to the front.

I knew they were needed, I was just asking about the placement. And was just wondering if the change was related to the increased height
They're on the side on the Classic.

Reace figures a 500lb. weight gain so I'm thinking that's still ok with 6100# tow cap.
Alf, were you given any indication of pin weight? "Half ton" pickups used with travel trailers seem to run out of payload to handle the hitch weight before they run out of total trailer weight capacity, especially with fifth-wheels.

That's my point: these are lights for a different function; Donna, you're talking about these lights as if they are functionally the same, just placed differently.

The lights on the front of the 5.0 TA have an entirely different purpose and do not replace the ones on the side of the old 5.0 as far as the requirements are concerned. The 5.0 TA needs the ones on the sides (like the old 5.0) plus the ones on the front. The requirement difference (due to the width) is an addition, not a move.

To confuse things, Reace has also apparently eliminated the upper side marker lights - I don't see any reason for that, unless he feels that the front clearance lights will also serve (effectively, although not legally) as side markers. That would make it a move with a functional change.

Normally pin weight of a 5th is between 14 and 20% of total trailer weight.

The 5.0 SA had an approximate total dry weight of 2620 lbs, dry pin weight was just under 18% at 480 lbs.
As stated the TA will weigh an extra 500 lbs then total dry is 3120 lbs * .18 = 561 lbs for the pin, dry. Add whatever for loaded.

Our F150 will has 2200 lbs payload before us and the hitch, it'll do.

Aren't they? I don't see any on the side up at the top. I checked on the 21 brochure and yes, they're also on the top front. So, that answers that.

The 21 has side marker lights at the front of the body, down low, below the belt line. The 5.0TA has also has them, same location. So both trailers have the front side markers and the forward facing markers.

Hi: All... I suspect that Reace has "Seen the light" and knows enough not to hide them under a basket!!! I'm sure he knows where they're supposed to go too!!!
We have put "Our Escape hatch" on a severe diet after dragging to much stuff to Florida... and more home. This will certainly carry over to "Escape Hatch II". Alf

The difference is that on the 21' they are at the front of the body, while the lower location on the 5.0 (original or TA) is not the front of the (upper) body. That doesn't meet the federal requirement to be "as far forward as practicable", which is presumably why ETI placed another set high and forward on the side of the original 5.0.

Yes, they both have the front clearance lights - due to the width - unlike the narrower original 5.0

Compared to the original, the 5.0 TA gains the front clearance lights (as required by width), but is missing the forward side markers (even though they are still required). Donna sees this as a move, which is fine, but it's like moving your headlights to the back to use them as backup lights: they are not just differently placed headlights, they are no longer headlights at all.

Maybe Reace just has a couple more lights to install...

Perfectly good guessing, but I was wondering if Reace had given any indication of the pin weight of the trailer which he's actually building. Of course, with no interior yet, it's probably too early to ask... but it will matter to Alf's truck.

Yes, we missing two lights...good catch.

As for a photo with someone beside the unit...everyone runs when I grab the camera. ?
