Escape Wannabee

Greetings from Kenora, Ontario. My wife and I are on the verge of retiring and are contemplating a small trailer to do some travelling over the next few years. We are very interested in the Escape but are also looking at the Scamp (primarily since we live near their factory). I am leaning towards the Escape primarily due to it being manufactured in Canada (always support the home team if possible). I am looking forward to getting to know other Escape Owners. I understand that there are a few Escapes in the Winnipeg area. If someone is interested in letting my wife and I look at the trailer, we would be appreciative. Also, I am interested in hearing your opinions regarding my current vehicle as a tow vehicle. We have a 2014 Ford Escape with the 2.0 litre engine (240 hp) and the tow package. The vehicle is rated to tow 3500 lbs. One thing that is missing is the 7 pin trailer wiring harness. How hard is it to convert a flat four to a 7 pin?

Looking forward to meeting some of you at an Escape Trailer Rally. If we proceed, we would be looking at delivery sometime in 2017.

You will get some response here, but if you contact Escape they will give you the names of people near you where you can view their trailers, though I bought my first one sight unseen, and have no regrets at all.

Your Ford Escape would be limited to towing a 17, and not with too much of a load either. You may get lucky, and just be able to plug in a 7 pin connector to your existing wiring harness, but if not need to add a 12V power supply wire, and one for the brake controller too.

Maybe you have to see it this way: choose the trailer you want, imagining spending lots of time camping the way you like with the trailer you like! Down the road you are going to trade of your Ford Escape anyway. It's easier to switch a tow vehicle then the trailer which will become your second home. (just another option of how to make your choice)

I think Marry's logic is good, as you need to first choose a trailer that will work for you. You will go through a few different tow vehicles in the life of an Escape trailer.

I think it is better to compromise what you might want with a tow vehicle, than what you want in a trailer, though I do well understand the desire, and often need, to tow with the one you're with.

Welcome Ray. We were all wannabees before we became owners. As for looking at fiberglass trailers, we first got interested in the Scamp, then looked at the Casitas but after discovering Escape, it was a done deal. As for a tow vehicle, unless you are getting a 13' Scamp, you might want something a little bigger. And a lot of us have bought new tow vehicles for our trailers. Loren

My wife and I, like Loren & Cathy got interested in Scamps frist. Than went and looked at a Casita, but when we walked into an Escape, it was a done deal! My advice is that since you live close to the Scamp factory, go and tour the Scamps and take your time, have a good look. Than contact Escape and ask for Escape owners in your area to tour there trailers.

Not sure what the point would be. I mean, we're already here and the whole participating forum isn't that large to start with.

I have to agree with baglo. If you have any questions or concerns directly applicable to only Canadians, you could say so in the title of a thread. Such as; Canadian financing or
Canadian beer (though we would get all those darn Americans whining about how much better ours is) ;D

Totally understand. The only intension with my question is to make it easier for people interested in Escape to find people in their neighbourhood to contact for info. By creating a list / map of somehow might help reduce phone calls to ETI for info, and in the mean time help promote.

I would also suggest that those that have not go there, and click on the "View Escape Trailers in a larger map" link at the bottom of that page to go to an editable version of the map. Somewhere on here someone had put up full instructions, and will go look for it.

HI my wife and I recently looked at an Escape 21 and fell in love with it. We have a Chevy Traverse that is tow rated for 5200 lbs. Anyone have a midsize SUV towing the 21, any problems towing, do we need a special hitch? So many questions for the forum to answer. I'm so glad I joined.

I hope people call ETI. I'm not on the map here, but ETI can give my info to a perspective buyer. If they buy one after I show it to them, ETI will send me a small check. I think it's $200CAD. We are in some aspect, part of the sales force.

Welcome, Steven. Yes, lots of us using mid-sized SUVs and we use a weight distributing hitch, Pro series, which Escape sells and will set up.
