Although BlackJack is a 2014 trailer (#1 of 2014) it was hatched in fall 2013. Today, my smoke detector was chirping, the batteries needed replacing. The date on the unit was May 2013, so just about 2 years. Be sure and check your unit if it is 2014 or earlier, these batteries may save your life.

That date on the smoke detector has nothing to do with the batteries. The batteries are only good for as long as they are good. The smoke detector should be replaced 5,7 or 10 years from install date ( recently made detectors last longer ).
I just replaced my propane detector and it had a date on it that was 6 months earlier. The dealer called MTI and they said that the unit should be replaced 5 years after the date of the installation, so I'm not sure why they put that date on the back of it.
I suggest reading the instruction manual to determine when your detector needs replacing.
Batteries need replacing when the smoke detector starts chirping.
