Getting answers on this forum.

Lets face it. A forum is not always the best place to go if you are looking for a correct answer to a question that can have serious implications to you either financially or otherwise. There are many people on many forums (not any of you fine folks of course) who are well intentioned, but give advice that may sound reasonable, but is in fact incorrect and sometimes even dangerous. I think it is good that many people respond with many answers to a question. To me this highlights the fact that there may be several solutions that warrant further investigation. Anyone who blindly follows advice given to them on a forum from someone who they have no experience with, is asking for trouble. Always confirm important information in some other manner.

That being said, participating in these forums is a great social activity, and is interesting to me in that it allows me to keep up to current happenings in whatever field your forum specializes in.

It is not just how or what people answer, the occasional person asking the question is really just looking for validation of what they already think or perceive the right answer to be, basically just looking to justify their own thoughts.

The thing that can be hard to remember when you're looking for answers/information, is that the only thing you're assured of getting on an Internet forum is an opinion. Everyone has one!

We all get frustrated at times when our original question isn't addressed as we wish, but it is human nature to want to share our own experiences - even when they don't quite relate to the question at hand.

Oh, yeah - and you also get what you paid for :D

A forum is, by definition, a place for discussion. All of the replies posted in response to the question would qualify as discussion...they added information and perspective and experiential information. Seems somebody just got up with a twist in their knickers....

... might I suggest reading the post prior to answering to insure what is being answered is indeed what is being asked.
I suggest reading the answers, and asking for clarification of them, rather than criticizing other members for their performance in responding to your requests. Since this is apparently "criticize your fellow forum members day", I'll also suggest not using "insure" when you mean "ensure". ;) <-- that's a smilie, which means don't take that last part seriously

I directly answered a question in the thread which triggered this one, and since I now see this thread I'll repeat the question and response, which are applicable here:
I just wanted an answer to the thread I started. Isn't that how forums work?
No; you may be thinking of a help desk service.
A forum is a conversation: you say something, other people say something which is likely related but not dictated by you. It goes back and forth, and may or may not go where you want.

Frustrating, isn't it? ;)
This is along the same lines as Donna's excellent response in this thread.

By the way, I found that other thread - including the original question and corresponding answer - interesting and informative.

What if the answer is incorrect?
Perhaps members are trying to understand the question when they respond.
Or, perhaps they are just sharing comraderie.
Should a question only have one response, that being the correct answer?
Who determines that?

Thank you for posting gbaglo. The replies I got to my original, hypothetical question were as amusing as they were frustrating. There is no correct or incorrect answer to a hypothetical question. I was hoping people would weigh in on the topic and in no way was I trying to undermine those with insulated trailers vs non insulated trailers. I was merely interested in the heat retention comparison. I didn't have an answer that I wanted validated. There was no hidden agenda.
