Has anyone installed this?

I recently purchased a 2024 F150 4x4 Lariat from the factory with the “Trailer Camera and Trailer TPMS” option. These items were delivered in a box in the back seat of the truck since they are “customer placed”.

I opened the box yesterday, and there are three issues:
  • There are no TPMS sensors for the trailer tires
  • There is no TPMS module to plug into the provided harness
  • The harness has no pigtail for the separate Yaw sensor required for a 5th wheel
  • You can use stickers for the “Pro Backup Trailer Assist” with a bumper tow, but for 5th wheel you need a “Yaw Sensor” (purchased separately)
I suspect I might have been given a “camera only” kit, but that is TBD. The provided installation instructions list a “D” harness (without Yaw pigtail) and a separate “D1” harness (with a Yaw pigtail). I am asking the dealer to provide the missing TPMS items and the alternate D1 harness.

In talking to the dealer’s service manager today to get this resolved, I was told that this option is only for an F250 super duty, and they don’t think my new 2024 F150 Lariat has the sensors in the truck to read either the trailer TPMS or the trailer Yaw sensor. The service manager is reluctant to order the missing parts which he thinks won’t work with my truck, but says they have no experience with this configuration. He is reaching out to Ford. He was mystified how I even ordered the Camera and TPMS option with an F150, but it was an option via “Build and Price” on Ford.com and the option is listed on my factory sticker, and the box was delivered with the truck.

This Ford video shows you can use the trailer camera and the trailer yaw sensor simultaneously with “Pro Backup Trailer Assist” which my F150 has the control for.

Sorry for all the detail, but here are my questions:
  • Has anyone installed the Ford trailer camera and trailer TPMS with a F150 and an Escape 5.0?
  • Has anyone added the yaw sensor to this setup so you get the full suite of “Pro Backup” trailer options?
I would be most interested in knowing if this setup works with a 2024 F150, since I know Ford has been changing things.

Yes. I installed Ford PN LC3Z1A189A which included all of the TPMS and Trailer Cam components but not the Yaw Sensor (though the harness branch and plug for the Yaw Sensor are present) on my 2022 F150 Lariat. Both the TPMS and Cam work great.

AFAIK the F150, unlike the SuperDuty (F250+), does not provide backup assist support for 5th-wheel / gooseneck trailers.

On my truck, even though the towing menu on the 12" screen allows defining my 5.0 as a 5th-wheel trailer, when I hit the Pro Backup Assist button, I get a message saying that trailer type is not supported. I can't proceed to calibrate the Backup Assist for a 5th-wheel trailer, only for conventional bumper-pull trailers.

FWIW I have not read on any F150 forum of any update or change to support those trailer types with F150 Backup Assist for any model year.

Actually the yaw sensor will work with a F150. I have a 2022 F150 XLT 3.5 ecoboost with tow package. It has the multipin connector on the rear bumper (in addition to the seven pin trailer connector) with only two wires connected. I bought the yaw sensor kit from Ebay and installed it on my 5.0 It works fine, the only thing is you have to define the trailer as a conventional bumper pull trailer.

This I understood to be true, but as you say intended for conventional trailers only.

I'm curious to know ....
  • Exactly where did you mount the sensor on your 5.0 (perhaps post a pic)?
  • What trailer dimensions / lengths / etc. did you enter for the conventional trailer definition you are using (perhaps post a screenshot)?
  • Do the lines projected on the dashboard display showing where your trailer will go when using Backup Assist accurately reflect its actual path as you back up at all angles (or does it 'go astray' at increasing angles)?
Just curious. I personally find no need for 'backup assist' with the 5.0, but YMMV, no worries!

I mounted the yaw sensor on the pin box, see photo.
Also, the trailer is defined as a conventional trailer with a length of 19ft. I just entered an arbitrary number for the length, somewhat shorter then the actual trailer length since it is not a bumper pull. As I dont know what algorithm Ford uses for this length I dont know what should be put in here. The instructions just say 'length of trailer to end of bumber', but it seems to me that to calculate the amount of steering needed to maneuver the trailer, the distance should actually be from the pivot point (ball for bumper pull) to the center point of the trailer wheens.
I dont remember how accurate the lines for the projected path, I would have to pay attention to it when I next use it.

I am not sure that there is a really a benefit to the 'backup assist', but I got the sensor for an very good price and just wanted to see how it works.

It is a yaw sensor and takes the place of the sticker/backup camera so that the truck knows what the trailer is doing when backing up. It is needed for fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers.

I just purchased a 2024 F-150 Lariat, 5.5' box, and fortunately haven't sprung for that TPMS/camera package yet, but was definitely looking at it. This is very informative, yet disappointing, to know the ProTrailer stuff doesn't actually support a 5th wheel  trailer. That being said... if the TPMS sensors do integrate with the Ford system, that's work the price of admission in itself.

You'll need the whole kit of sensors, receiver, and harness connecting to the truck, but yeah, IMO the trailer TPMS info integrated in the in the truck's display is very nice indeed (and if you go for the integrated trailer cam that's icing on the cake)! :)

As for the lack of pro-assist backing ..... IME with a bit of practice backing the 5.0 is a snap anyway ;)

Got it, thanks... yes, camera and sensors are the top priority. While this will be my first 5th wheel, I've been backing up trailers for 35+ years, so it was more of a curiousity about the gadgetry thing for me.

I finally have the Ford trailer camera working. It is a nice interface with the Ford F150 displays. I can see both sides of the trailer and behind the trailer at the same time on the large center screen.

It was a nice surprise to see that the Ford trailer TPMS system shows both pressure and temperature. It appears you can set the desired PSI and get alerted if the pressure goes too low. I can show the trailer tire info on the driver display while monitoring both sides and behind the trailer on the center display.

Thanks to @Centex for recommending this DIO option when I ordered the truck!
