Hi Battery Storage Temps

This being our first summer with a LiFePO4 battery and with day time temperatures climbing into the low 100F range I'm keeping an eye on battery cave temperatures. The trailer is stored inside a fully enclosed tin building which is warmer inside than outside temperatures. The battery is at 57% storage SOC and the warmest battery cave temperature I've seen is 97F, so still not anywhere close to the 122F storage temp limit, much less the 140F operating temp limit.

I'm curious what kind of high storage temperature experiences those of you with LFP batteries have had and what you may have done to mitigate high battery cave temperatures short of removing the battery from the trailer and moving it to a cooler location. Does exceeding storage temp limits have dangerous short term implications or does exceeding hi temp storage limits simply impact long term longevity and number of charge cycles?

This is the storage guidance for my single BestGo 400Ah LiFePO4 battery:
  • Storage Temperature -10°C ~ 40°C (for ≤ 3 months) [40°C = 104°F]
  • Keep SOC at 40~60% for long term storage
My completely closed trailer with battery under the dinette bench sits outdoors in full Texas sun, ambient as high as 100°F+/- for some hours on some days. I do not monitor trailer indoor temps.

I do not take any particular steps to mitigate heat in the trailer on those hottest days (I do occasionally run my shore-powered mini-split heap pump in 'cooling-drying mode' to manage humidity / moisture in the trailer as needed).

IF there's any adverse effects, I'm not detecting them, maybe they are cumulative over the long term (ignorance is bliss?).

Just FYI, YMMV as always.

Thank you Alan for your response. Good to know you're somewhat relaxed about high temperatures, presuming their effects to be somewhat cumulative over the long term.

I just came back from storage and am beginning to see a consistent trend. Outside air temp was 101F, storage inside air temp was 104F, trailer entryway air temp was 107F, and battery cave (same location as yours) air temp was 95F. Underneath the curbside dinette seat is the coldest trailer location in winter and appears to be the least hot in summer. So I'm thinking I can generally count on the battery cave air temp to be approximately 5 degrees cooler than outside air temp. I'll be monitoring it the next few days to confirm the trend.
