Our first cold front of the season rolled through this weekend. Tonight I found an oak snake in the hallway, outside my bedroom. I guess it decided to come on in and get warm.

Had to look up "Oak Snake" on the web. They say it can grow to 7' in length …. yikes! I'm glad I live in Alaska …. no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no poisonous snakes or spiders … all I have to worry about is running into a grizzly bear or getting buried in snow. Whew!

Always think of earthquakes as scary for the west coast .....we have friends on Van. Is that keep an " earthquake kit" by their back door ...
Finding a snake in my house would have me wanting to move ....yikes

We have a large area of snow coming at us and have been destroying record lows. I think we might have a rough winter this year. The last three were mild, so we are due.

The settlers asked the wise old Indian to read the signs to figure out what kind of a winter they were going to have. So he read the signs and told the settlers that it was going to be a hard winter. The settlers wanted to know how he had come to this conclusion. His answer was, “White man cutum much wood.” Loren

This snake was young and small-- about a foot long and the width of an AA battery. It was too young to know to run from me so it was easy to pick up and toss into the yard. I hope it didn't hatch out somewhere in the house; in that case I'll find two or three more in quick succession. Adult snakes really don't like people and my presence will usually keep them away. But the young ones will wander in. Before I had a cap put on my chimney birds would nest in it. The oak snakes would come in after the birds' eggs, then make their own nest. The snake eggs would hatch and the young snakes would climb/fall down the chimney into my family room. I found three in one day that way. After capping the chimney that problem seems to have gone away.
