Leveling single axle (side to side)

leveler

I bought this at O'Connors down the street from ETI when I picked up my 17B single axle. Under $30 and worked like a charm. Still use it on my 19.

Good, sounds like several simple options will work if I can't find the BAL parts. (Or maybe anyway, not fond of that thing...)

I am old school. I cut up a few 3/4" thick fence boards into short lengths and based on how out of level the trailer is, I place 1 to 3 boards behind the wheel and back onto them. Nine times out of ten the trailer is level the first try.

Albertans

For all the Albertans out there how happy are you that the camping season is probably delayed due to our gross winter?

Thanks for the reminder, Jim. I want to try that app.

Isn't it great that everybody gets to do it whatever way they want!

I'm not an Albertan and haven't been home since March 10. Now near Ottawa and leaving trailer here. Do I winterize it again while it sits for new owners to pick it up? It's still very winter like here, getting below zero at night and not much above in the day. We're supposed to head to Georgian Bay area Friday but freezing rain and possibly lots of snow are forecast. We really would like to return to Georgia where it was 28 one day last week while we were there.

oh, when I'm precision backing up solo, I eyeball the distance I think I need to travel with my hands held that far apart, then walk up to my driver side running board, and eyeball how many tread blocks that is, sit in the drivers seat leaving the drivers door open, eyeball a distinctive mark on the ground past a tread block on the step, then pull the vehicle forwards or backwards the right number of step marks ... sounds complicated, but its surprisingly accurate, I can back the ball right up under the hitch this way in 1-2 tries.

Ditto, but with a few varying lengths of 5/8" thick x 6" wide wood decking scraps we had laying around. They work great and cost nothing (in our situation).

Have chocks both sides of the opposite wheel, and one chock on the wheel on the pyramid ( down slope side ).

on uneven ground, I've had my older single axle trailer (a Casita) twist a littlesideways and that chock on the lego ramp popped out, it cracked the nose cone but thankfully didn't fall completely.

the double axle Escape does seem more stable. plus its 4 stablizer legs are vastly superior to the 2 funky friction jacks the Casita had.

anyways, the Andersen style really holds the wheels securely so they won't shift forwards or backwards.

Looks great, but what if you need another three inches?
I also have a ramp I made out of a 2' - 2"X6" and a chunk of 2" X 4".
It's heavy and slimy, but cheap.

so far thats only happened to me once, in the dirt, so I dug a trench for the other wheel, then when we broke camp, I filled it back in and backed over it a couple times to compact it back to the way it was.

In defense of my Lynx blocks, I have two bags ( 10 individual blocks each ). They serve to level the trailer and I place them under the stabilizers and if I have enough, under the jack post so I don't have to do so much cranking.

my escape came with a big bin of those, plus a bunch of other plates and blocks. I added the double andersen kit

I have a cone for the jack post so it rarely needs much cranking.

Anderson Leveler and Remote Level app

Personally, I find the Anderson Leveler type very easy to use, and very stable.

I have had to "roll" it onto a piece of 2x6 on occasion, and even dig a bit of a hole on the opposite wheel in extreme cases. However, I camp off the beaten path. I've never had a problem in any reasonable site.

I have a set of leveling blocks, but haven't used them since getting the Anderson … not ever. They're just too much trouble, and not as accurate.

As for one person leveling, a big level mounted on the front of the trailer, visible by the driver, works fine. I just find a spot reasonably close to level, then throw the leveler in front of the low wheel, and move ahead a few inches to level. Couldn't be easier!

However, I have recently added technology to replace the big level mounted on the front of the trailer. For Android, the free "Remote Level" app (see pictures), combined with two phones, provides a transmit/receive remote level.

I use my current phone in the cab as the receiver, and an old phone permanently mounted and powered in the trailer as the transmitter. You could also use a second active phone as the transmitter, placed temporarily on a counter when leveling.

The app can be easily calibrated for "trailer level" with the transmit phone on any surface, and stores "hitch height" for reconnecting. Units can be set to height in inches (based on trailer dimensions) for a more meaningful display.

While parking and using the Anderson Leveler, I'm only looking at side-to-side on the receiver. Once the trailer is disconnected, I have the receiver phone in hand to do the front to back level, and tweak the side to side with jacks and stabilizers.
