Modification needed due to dust in the water inlet ports

We had an issue with our water fill ports getting 'dust' in them on a recent trip when we drove through a dust storm in Nevada. I was thinking of adding a 'hatch' on the outside of the ports so that it keeps the ports clean. Has anyone done something similar and/or modified the current

Would add this to the outside via caulk or 'glue'... I would have to modify it so that the flange in the back was removed so it laid flat on the outside of the trailer.

Up to 2014 Escapes came with a covered water fill. I was disappointed when I picked up my 19 that they'd just switched to the exposed fillers.

Good luck installing a covered filler.

I hear you Ron...

I don't understand why these outlets are not under lock and key.
Seems like a new mod coming on.

Leave it as is and you could end up with contaminated water from dust and dirt or at the hands of a evil doer. (Would hope not..)

Flange

A large bandsaw could make short work of cutting off the insert flange. A table saw would work too. A Dremel rotary tool with a cutting blade might be safest, with any residual flange sanded away with a drum sander on the Dremel.

Heck, a fine tooth hand saw would work as well.

Good luck.

Not as bad as the water filler on my Scamp 13. It looked like a mini urinal with a toilet seat. I was always hoping that some kid wandering by wouldn't see it that way.

I suppose it could happen, but in all the years I've been on the molded forums and Facebook groups I've never read where anyone has gotten contaminated water by a nefarious individual. What I have read about on the lockable doors is people complaining the doors broke or they banged against the side of the trailer in windy conditions. Dust on the outside I can understand, I've gotten that driving down dusty roads. Not a biggy though....

Though not concealed by a lockable cover, both the city water connection and tank fill ports on my trailer have tight-fitting caps installed over the inlets whenever they are not in use. Are these not adequate to prevent dust intrusion?

I guess fresh water tank vent line is exposed.....

I have looked for a unit with a locking door and all the ones that I found would require cutting a larger hole in the trailer so I have back burnered that project. I am not sure gluing a cover on the outside of the trailer would stand the test of time.

Ours have always been adequate and we have seen some dusty roads over the years.
