Our "Ever Thoughtful" gas utility put the natural gas line 1' deep, directly over my 6' deep water line. Guess what had to be replaced?

Oh sheesh ....that should read "Is it" Not "it is " are gas lines are never very deep , we always need to call for location markings when we do any digging up here .

Are gas lines is supposed to be " our gas lines " oh brother can't seem to get anything right ....can I blame it on a cold ?

I too have never heard of gas lines freezing, and ours are like Brian's, less that 2' deep, well above the frost line.

Glad to hear they got you warmed up before other damage occurred.

Even if you're sure that any utilities are buried more than deep enough, please call for a location service every time.
While location systems vary by area, ClickBeforeYouDig.com (for Canada and the U.S.) or a call to 811 (in most of the United States, but not in Canada) should get you the right people.

An error not caught by a location check can be destructive or dangerous.

Parallel to the water line? Crossing is often unavoidable, but the gas crew in our area was careful to cross other services in as few places as possible, at nearly right angles to minimize overlapping areas (and of course exposed each crossing by hand or hyrdrovac to ensure no damage). As in any field, competence and consideration varies...

Had a neighbor come out and complain to me that they were digging in front of his house but he had gas. I explained that the neighbor across the street was frozen. He then said, "why are they not digging up the other side where his gas is" and when I said there is only one gas line down the street, he realized his question was...."Duh"

No, directly on top for about 50' of the run. No reason they had to (I even asked & got a shrug), in fact it made the run a bit longer from the street than a perpendicular connection. At least they didn't try to charge me for replacing the gas line when the water line had to be replaced.
