We had a similar but different situation this past summer. Our 2015 E19 was caught in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison wildfire that eventually decimated 4500 acres. Our camper was the only one to survive the fire physically intact with only a few minor ember burns. Somehow the fire skipped our campsite. A few days after the fire started, the camper was towed down to a staging area by the NPS. We picked it up and towed it home and discovered that though physically intact, the interior of the camper was totally infused with smoke & ash and it reeked! We had the Serve Pro mitigation folks inspect it and their evaluation of the smoke damage was that anything plastic, fiber, or wood would have to be removed and trashed because of the toxicity in the smoke. In essence, our trailer would have to be gutted and rebuilt.
Fortunately, on our last insurance go round I had comprehensive coverage added. In this instance - wildfire - it was covered under the policy. I shudder to think where we would have been with just collision coverage.
Insurance companies live on paper and they need estimates. Where to find one for a rebuild?
We had numerous conversations with Escape re: rebuilding but our 2015 was too old as all the patterns, plans and many of the parts from that era we lost in the factory fire and they were unable to rebuild the interior and could not provide us with an estimate. After some thought, Escape suggested that we contact Retroreno in Jacksonville Fl who rebuild fiberglass trailers and work closely with Escape. After hearing our story, they graciously provided us with an estimate for a gut and rebuild that was healthily over the comprehensive value and our Houdini II was totaled. That provided a downpayment on the new Houdini III - a 21C that arrived the end of October.
