Yep! We use oil cloth and I love it. It is durable and cleans up nicely. I picked up mine at a local fabric store.
I did not think so either Pat, and went looking. It seems almost all fabric sold as tabletop oilcloth is actually vinyl coated cotton. It is still touted as a great product, that looks and wears well. It sounds like it has been many years since real French oilcloth was made, though there might be a few manufacturers out there still.
