Pink Elephant, June 21-23, 2024

We are here at Pike's Peak. There is a Scamp here, but i do not have a record of them as part of our group. Of course, I will invite them, if they are here long enough. Gnats are bad, but our screen house is detering them. We will be visiting with our former Elkader minister tomorrow and a high school classmate of Kevin's the next day (We visited my mother in Anamosa today.) in Decorah. From Thursday on, we will be mostly be hanging around our campsite, site 39, except for a few trips to Prairie Du Chien for food, and maybe the Villa Louis.

See you all in the next few days.

Cindy and Kevin

Hi Cindy
How’s the wind there? Pretty breezy in open farm country. Been thinking about being my easy up for some shade if it’s too windy for the awning or the screen room.
Otherwise looking forward to Thursday arrival

Do you have sides to your easy up? The flies and gnats are bad, but our screenhouse is keeping the gnats at bay. The flies are finding their way under the camper and into the screenhouse but not enough numbers that a flyswatter can't deal with them.
The wind has not been bad enough to get Kevin worried about taking down our screenhouse yet.

No sadly I do not have sides for the easy up. The screen room has a skirt that fits pretty well and we once in a while use the easy up for shade or a straight down sprinkle rain.
It’s good for keeping the grandkids out of the camper. You’ve heard of wrangling cats? Here’s my youngest daughter Teresa with her two and a niece and a nephew at yellow river during the pandemic.

They would keep you busy!

Cindy

PS: We have the wrangling cats in our camper right now, four of them. Luckily, they are all Munchkins, so they do not take up the space of full-sized cats. When you pull in, you likely will see the white one in the back window.

Dave, it’s a bit breezy today with wind speeds around 12-15 mph. The forecast calls for brief higher gusts. Winds are supposed to be lower later this week. Your site has a lot of trees nearby, so the winds may get blocked a bit, too.

Thanks Kevin. It looked like it was a nice site when we reconnoitered the area before the leaves came on. We’re stumbling towards departure with getting things Watered up here at home, readying the Escape and setting up some irrigation on the garden. It’s hot though and as most folks know, lard will melt and I don’t want that to happen.

We are having to change the venue of the supper on Thursday night for those of you who are going. We ate at the Backwoods tonight, and the suggestion of about 30 people on Thursday night brought a deer-in-headlights look to his face, and he suggested going to Prairie Du Chien, as he has a cook and himself who waits tables and tends the bar. So we contacted "The Barn" in Prairie, and they were more welcoming. There are a couple of "buts" though. We may have to sit in a couple of groups, and they may want to limit our choices for entrees. Their special on Thursday are pork ribs (which I won't eat).

We will let you know more when we know. We will call The Barn tomorrow to talk with the guy who will take care of this. We will let you know what we find out.

Cindy

If the Barn doesn't work out, you could try Fort Mulligan's Grill/Pub. You'd have to spread out but I liked the food when I've eaten there. Don't forget to stop and Valley Fish and Cheese. The link below is a 26 minute episode from WI Foodie, during which they spend 2 days with the owner catching and smoking fish from the Mississippi. Pete's Hambergers is a must too.

And one more change to the Thursday night supper. The Barn Restaurant had 2 wedding rehearsal dinners tomorrow night, so the manager suggested Huckleberry's in Prairie Du Chien. So I called them, and they are pretty sure 5:30 tomorrow night will work for our group of around 26 to 30, at least as far as I know the number. We will double check in the morning. We can order off the menu there. Here is their menu: https://huckspdc.com/home/dinners/. We ate there once with our daughter and son-in-law. As I recall, a big salad bar and a large space, although I think we might have been eating a Sunday brunch, so a Thursday night might be different.

Please let us know if you have not done so at this point if you are going Thursday night!

Kevin will call in the AM to finalize the location, but this is where we plan our supper to be tomorrow night at this point.

Cindy

PS: I will post maps later.

Here is the map to Huckleberry's

OK, Huckleberry’s is expecting our group for a 5:30 reservation tonight. We should probably plan to leave the campground around 5. Check the map posted earlier.

We still have room for more diners tonight. Feel free to join us! Please let us know if you haven’t already notified us.

Also, tonight’s camp fire at our site will depend on the weather. Fingers crossed for a dry spell!

Coffee at our site will be available starting Friday morning from 7:30 - 9:00, rain or shine.

Weather dot com forecast calls for a serious chance of rain Friday and Saturday. I hope the rain and breeze only keep the gnats down, and not spirits, for you folks.

Mary, in site 2, here at Pike's Peak, invites anyone wanting to see their new Escape 23 to just stop by.
