We are planning a summer trip to Labrador and Newfoundland……any information you may have or your experiences would be helpful. We live in Maine on the Canadian border and have done the Gaspe, Nova Scotia and PEI in the past…..Thanks

We traveled the Trans-Labrador highway in the summer of 2017. Here are some observations from our travels:

Crossing the ferry from St. Barbe to Lourdes-de-Blanc is often canceled or delayed because of bad weather. Make a reservation for the ferry and be prepared to camp close to the ferry in case of bad weather.

The road north to Port Hope Simpson was paved and generally in good shape. There was a lot of construction in the area.

The road from Port Hope Simpson to Happy Valley - Goose Bay was packed gravel but in excellent shape. We drove this at a steady 45 mph to keep down the dust. Use garbage bags to enclose your belongs and seal out much of the dust. We also had rocks hit the fresh water drain and open the valve while driving. Wrapped the inlet hose with a pool noodle to protect the valve from getting destroyed.

Route 500 from Goose Bay to Labrador City was newly paved and a joy to travel.

Route 389 from Fermont to Baie-Corneau was mostly gravel and the worst road I have ever travelled. Deep pot holes, the size of small cars, were everywhere. Average speed was probably less than 20 mph.

Finding gas was always a problem. We never ran out, but we were very close on several sections of the highway. The towns and the people along the way were fantastic and welcoming. We would do the trip again just because of the people we met and the unbroken scenery!

Funny, my wife and I were just talking yesterday about Newfoundland and Labrador as a possible trip for the spring.

I'll be checking out the links and following this thread, too. Thanks to all.

Ill share what I get for info with you if youd like……remember Spring up there is like July lol

We spent one June there and you're right, it was cool. I had to stop in the first town and buy a sweater.

It will take us a while to get there from where we live in Manitoba. We have to drive across half the country to get to the first ferry or to reach Labrador by the land route.

That would be great if you would not mind emailing those to me, would be much appreciated……..thanks Michael.
Well, darn. Gmail won't send it because it is too big. So I had to create a Google Drive link. I hope this works; I'm not experienced with making Google Drive links. Gmail actually manufactured it for me.

As Ann Landers would have said, "quit yer bellyaching." We had to drive across the whole country. :)

Yes quite a difference in Newfoundland North to South. At L'anse aux Meadows it was still like winter in July while the Southern areas were warm and buggy.

My only 2 cents about the route on Newfoundland is to take the circular route. The longer ferry ride saves a lot of travelling back on the same route.

A one day less drive for us from Calgary last year but totally worth it.

Though all The Maritimes was great, Newfoundland was our favourite.

For the added 8 hour drive to return by highway and the desire to see more stuff, we opted to take the shorter ferry and save a lot of money. It adds a lot of time to the ferry ride too, but I forget how much.

While we did a 3 month trip to The Maritimes last year we never really spent a lot of time in New Brunswick or Labrador. We will be doing this trip in the future, following the route posted here. Looking forward to what input is provided.

I think anyone should be able to access this file on Google Drive now.

I'll tell you, Google Drive drives me a little bit nuts. After gmail prompted me to put the file on drive, I went there and looked all over heck's half acre trying to find if there was something I should/could do to make it available to all. Nope, it seemed to already be that way. So then I post the link. And someone email-messages me via Drive saying they can't access it without permission, which is what I suspected would happen! But from that message I was finally presented a way to select "make public" (again?). Based on past experience of other people sharing Google Drive files with me and the wonky workaround (I would always have to write them and ask for access from them, too), I think it should be all sent now.... y'all let me know if it works!

Thank you, Mike. The link works now.

We did this in 2019 with our 2007 Tacoma and 2006 Escape 17B. The roads in Quebec are terrible whether they are paved or not. We started in Whistler B.C. June 1, drove across Canada and got back home around July 30. There was still snow in places in Labrador. No issues with the truck or trailer. Both are still going strong. Here is a short video I did after the trip of the Labrador section. Newfoundland is amazing.

Reading all the info I can get my hands on as we’re planning to travel cross-county mid July, meet up with friends in NH, and then travel to Newfoundland for a month beginning in August. Doing the circumnavigate route around the island then ferry back to NovaScotia for a week or so there and to Acadia Nat’l Park for another week. Back to NH and then to start our slow and scenic trek back to CA.
Any tips beyond Norm & Ginny’s notes will be appreciated. 😊

We are also planning a trip out to the east coast of Canada this spring probably leaving in early May, weather permitting. We are definitely planning on visiting Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland. Should be awesome!

I will also be following this thread with interest.

This is a great thread and thanks for sharing your experiences. My son and I will visit the Maritimes in May, including Newfoundland. Leaving from Ottawa, it won’t be so taxing. (We crossed the country to Vancouver last year and that was *long*! The 5.0 was great throughout.)

We did a cross Canada trip starting from (US entry) at Duluth and going across Lake Superior, through Quebec and on to the Maritimes and Newfoundland. It was a wonderful, gorgeous trip with stays mostly in provincial parks. In Newfoundland we did a boat trip near Gros Morne. Cow’s Head has a wonderful summer theater. Definitely try to get to L’Anse aux Meadows at the very northern tip. It was a trip of a lifetime and I would do it again in a heartbeat. People were kind, friendly, helpful and patient with our questions.

Some friends were heading to Newfoundland last year and asked for some of our insights from our trip in 2023. I'll attach the note that I sent to them.....hopefully the attachment will work & is helpful to some.

This summer, we're going to parallel some of Donna D's itinerary up through BC, to the Yukon & Alaska, after the Rally. We can't wait to get back up there. This time I'm planning to do the Dempster to Tuk as well.
