preferred bug/tar clnr and wax

Several weeks after my post above: I'm hoping there is UV protection because I am underwhelmed by the shine. It's OK on the sides, but no significant luster over what it was previously. I treated the somewhat oxidized roof 3 times, using the Aero 303 website recommended "method 1 for restoring gelcoat fiberglass" on the last two applications. It is satin-like at best when viewed head-on, probably more like semi-gloss when viewed sideways. Maybe another treatment, or another plan - don't know, Glenn.

Here is some info from the 303 Aerospace web site - note that it says a matte finish.

I have yet waxed or 303ed but now that it is one year old perhaps it is time to do so? Also might help with the black water streaks running off the roof - that is probably a symptom from living on the west coast?

I've just used Simonize Wash and Wax solution since getting the trailer in 2008. Trailer is shiny, except for the front, top edge. I'm tackling that today.
So far, I've found that Turtle Wax Bug 'n' Tar can't deal with what I think are cedar leaf stains. Applied Vim cleaner ( has a mild abrasive ) to a couple spots and it worked, but I'm not going further until I see if the shine can be restored.
Used Mother's with carnuba wax on the front leading edge, but I'm not impressed so far. Next, I'm going to apply Nu Finish which claims it is excellent for fiberglass boats and recreation vehicles. "No rubbing, no buffing".
I've got five different products to hand, which says something about my ability to stick with a project.

Geln, I have used 3m marine fibergalss gelcoat polishing compound from Canadian Tire for that kind of stuff and it works great. I just use one of those micro fiber cloths and gently rub the compound in. I have not found anything that I can't get off yet. Like you I try to use products for their intended use where I can. they keep that stuff in the boating section not with the car detailing stuff at the store I go to .

if its got 3m on the label its never cheap, But their products generaly work very well.

So far, I've just used elbow grease. I do have a Simonize power polisher, but the instructions say to apply it in short, straight, strokes. Have you used a power tool with it?

I have used 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax on several boats I have owed by applying and buffing by hand, and have used on my automobiles, and this wax lasts a long time and provides a high gloss. I plan on using it on my new Escape when I pick it up next month.

I try to be careful with the combination products with wax and a cleaner as the products typically have abrasive additives used to clean the surface. I would use this type of product if there is oxidation in the gel coat, stains or difficult to remove oils from the road. If none of this is present I prefer to use a good cleaning solution first, e.g. car or boat wash or Dawn dish soap, and then wax with a quality paste wax.

Yup. I'm using it on the dull area at the front where it meets the roof, and on some stains on the roof. I'll follow with a good wax.

Has anyone used Meguiar's Flagship Premium Marine Wax on their Escape? On most of Amazon ratings, you get goods and bads. On this product there were 40 five star ratings, 3 four star and 1 3 star. I've had excellent result with other Meguiar's products.

So far I've fount that the best, fastest, easiest bug and grime cleaner is Windex and paper towels. It can be done at any camp site too. Takes about an hour and a half, uses 3/4 of a spray bottle and 3/4 of a roll of paper towel. I save the roof and vents etc for when I get home.

I lost my first job for using paper hand towels to dry a client's Cadillac after washing it. They are abrasive.

Fibreglass is not paint.

Nah. It was a gas station in Tsawwassen. I didn't actually get fired. Boss asked me to quit.
A good move, actually.
