Recommendations: Washington DC to New Hampshire

Leaving DC at the end of this contract and will have a week + to travel up to New Hampshire for my next contract. Would like to break the trip up over a couple days / travel a little once I’m up in NH before my start date. I’ll have a big dog with me. Where should I stay what should I see / do?

Stay off I95, it is a parking lot from WDC to New York. Head west from WDC, I70 to I81 north which will get you up to New York and you can then head over to NH. Plenty of KOA's along the way. I81 takes you to I88 to Albany and then I90 over to I91 north to NH.

In my wandering last year, I stayed at Schodack Island State Park maybe a dozen miles south of Albany, NY. Nice big sites, pull through, I was in #1. In PA I stayed in Gordonville, at Country Acres. The bathrooms were exceptional. They offered a free two hour tour (nice small bus) of the surrounding Amish country, asking only that I tip the driver. It was interesting with a knowledgeable and friendly driver. The stops (a bakery, a dairy farm with excellent ice cream, can't remember what else) were great. There was a local butcher shop/meat market (not on the tour) Stoltzfus Meats (it's in the next town over, Intercourse PA, (!) where I bought a couple kinds of brats; they had all kinds of good stuff. Enjoy your trip!

You didn't say when or where in NH you are going or what kind of things your looking at doing.

I agree with Jim, take the I-81 route, depending where you are headed you can cut over on 84.

You're right I didn't! My next contract is up at Dartmouth so I'll be in Lebanon. I like the idea of heading up through Binghamton, I have family there. I'm not looking so much for things to do as I am looking for good campgrounds out of the way.

Exceptional bathrooms is like #1 on my camping list right now hahaha. Have stayed at some very underfunded NPs lately. I'm checking that spot out in PA.

I agree with CPA Harley. Avoid the DC/Baltimore corridor at all costs. The last time I started out my trip from Lancaster, PA to Richmond it was bumper to bumper from the I-695/I-95/I-495 exchanges all the way to Newington, VA (total distance 62 miles). It took about 2.5 hours to get through this living parking lot.

Not only were the bathrooms amazing, but in 3 days i never saw anyone else in there.
