Like the last couple weeks. Just as nice of camping weather as we see in spring or fall. I don't think Jasper's water bowl has frozen over during the night for a while now.

Lilac Index

Several years ago, Cornell University studied different plants that could be used as a accurate index for planting gardens. They used the Lilac for their index because they are common across the United States and are generally disease resistant.

Results: Plant your cold weather crops, potatoes and peas, when the leaves of the lilac are the size of a squirrels ear. Approximately 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch.
Plant the remainder of the garden when the bush is about 90% full bloom.

My rhubarb grows on the west side of the propane tank. Its currently under about a foot of melting snow and ice. It will be a while, In our country there is considerable appreciation for
phenology especially among the farming and hunting, fishing and gathering community. Peak of the morel mushroom appearance was always said to be when the white oak leaf was the size of a squirrels ear. The lilac bloom is a little on the late side sometimes and the mushrooms only last a few days. For planting potatoes we are Good Friday people,

Totally jealous , although weather is pretty wonderful here we really could use something rain . We'll probably get a big snow dump in March .


Right now we don't have enough moisture for anything ...

Golden Ears (20-min down the road from us) is open year round and until March 31 the fee is $11.00

No rhubarb here in Baja but my neighbor says my house is still standing but hasn't given me my rhubarb status. Yours is looking good. The race to the first pie is on.

But I'm not worried, mine's near a reflective wall and now that the sun's shinning brightly I'm sure it'll surge ahead.

I can almost taste that rhubarb and strawberry pie.
