Well.. If you're planning a stay in the Bay Area, Samuel P Taylor Park is great!! Unfortunately it's on the list of perspective "closed" parks due to the CA budget crisis.. So if you're coming this way, check this park out.. It's around 30 miles north of SF, 8 miles away from Pt Reyes which is a national seashore ( ocean beach, whale watching..) & about 30 mi away from Napa Wine country.. The park is nestled in the Redwood trees and the sites are very nicely done (no hook-ups) but you feel surrounded by nature.. It's a small park around 50 sites and relatively quite (not like Yosemite..).. Who know what will happen with our parks, but just in case you're thinking of the Bay Area as a quick getaway, definitely check out this park as a stop over..

We did a few extended family camping weeks at Samuel P Taylor years ago. Really nice campground. Like you said, it's close to a lot of things if you want to do day trips. We took an excursion from there to Angel Island one year that was really fun and interesting. Of course, Angel Island may also be closing... :(
