San Antonio to Canada - Part Deaux

It took me a minute to figure out too. If the discussion with it was not centred around Utah, I would never have got it. There seems to be a move to acronyms for lots of things on here, though my vocabulary is getting better at it.

Jim in YYC :)

Our move to everything being short, sweet and fast . That's why we go camping and go back to simple and chill . Pat:)

I have to admit that I15 in the Salt Lake City area is one of the few interstates I was nervous about driving my usual 60MPH.

Been there on I-15, with a death grip on the wheel…Drove there a week ago for granddaughter's graduation. Late Thursday afternoon we deviated east to Ogden Valley to visit our 80's neighborhood, had a burger and beer at the Shooting Star Saloon in Huntsville, then meandered south to eventually rejoin I-15 at Farmington. By then - light traffic and random speeders; the worst of which was a patrol car smoking down the express lane - no flashing lights. Returned early Saturday morning - light traffic. Good timing - more luck than intention!

I agree that the thread went a little off the tracks. It's just a chronicle of our trip to Osoyoos and back, and included an observation that I-15 through Salt Lake was scary stuff. It wasn't a comment about culture or religion. I grew up in the Salt Lake area, and the driving habits have changed dramatically since I left in 1979. That's really all I was trying to say.

Given the choice we usually take 93 along the eastern edge of NV. Great road, beautiful scenery, little traffic, and shorter distance. Most of the campground folks in NV and Idaho advised us to avoid I-15 at all costs.

I see this thread as a public service. Now that I am aware of this, thank you very much, I will be aware as we travel in that direction. As Greg mentioned, alternate routes have distinct advantages and will be considered for their unique qualities.

Robert, glad you mentioned this, it's an important topic - road safety.

We're at Bonito Hollow Campground in the mountains of south central New Mexico, near Ruidoso tonight. Nice place. There apparently was a pretty devastating forest fire about 4 years ago and many of the mountain tops are just dead pine trees. The campground owner tells me the place was shut down for a year while they rebuilt, because the fire took out their water system and power.

Hi: cpaharley2008... Interesting question. IMHO after the rally It'd be "All downhill from here" so the mileage should be much better.;D Alf
escape artist N.S. of Lake Erie;)

But you are forgetting the additional weight being carried home from all that good rally food and wine and beer and let's not forget ......poutine.

Jim, there is absolutely no Poutine aboard, but we do have some squeaky cheese in the fridge. :)

We are averaging about 1.1 mpg better so far on the return trip. Yesterday we got 15.5 mpg. Not bad, considering we were traveling about 67 mph, which is a little faster than normal.

For those of you (like me) who grew up listening to Smoky Bear saying "only you can prevent forest fires", it turns out that Smoky Bear came from the mountains here in southern New Mexico. We just went to the little town of Capitan for supplies, and they have a Smoky Bear historical site and museum. The original Smoky Bear (that inspired the ad campaign) is actually buried on the site. The RV parks and campgrounds around here all evoke a bear theme in one way or another.

Nice Robert, you must have gone through Carrizozo, thought that was such a neat name when we stopped there last winter on the the way to Las Cruces. anxious to hear what your overall mileage for the round trip to Osoyoos was. Also anxious for Friday when I get rails installed in the new F150 so can finally hook up to the trailer and go camping:)

Adrian, see post#111

That's just going home right? I was wondering about the whole round trip since as Alf says going home is "all downhill";D

Reason I was asking Robert was that we bought the same engine the 2.7 Ecoboost

See post #12 for the mileage going......

Looks like you dodged a bullet with that meteor strike!

Staying at the Marathon Motel and RV Park in Marathon TX tonight. Good jumping off point for Big Bend NP and Chisos Basin tomorrow morning - only 2 hours away.

By the way, US 285 from Loving NM to the Texas border is one sorry excuse for a road. Whole patches of blacktop broken and patched, and it's obvious the damage is from overweight trucks. As soon as you hit the Texas line the road is fine. NM really needs to fix their piece. If you're ever in southeast NM, avoid the southern end of US 285 like the plague.

We passed the big Target store between Alpine and Marathon today. Not crowded. It's not my photo, since I was driving.

Rita and I worked for Smokey as lookouts in 1970. We used to hand out the Smokey story comic books to visitors to the lookout. The song was in the back as I remember and we used to sing it every morning Right after we pledged allegiance to the Pine tree logo.
