Apparently there is "free camping" at a place near the Salton Sea in Southern California. It appears inhabited in cold weather by Canadian RV'ers, as well as other eclectic types and some in between. I understand there are no amenities except slabs of cement that were formerly floors in governmental buildings, but some enterprising souls will deliver water and "honey wagon" services. Has anyone heard of it? Or been there? http://www.slabcity.org/. Also, the Casita Club has a thread about Route 66 and Little Plastic Trailers. Apparently an effort is being made to caravan from Chicago to LA sometime in the future with people joining and leaving as their schedule permits. I'm not sure if there would be the reverse trip, but I would imagine. What a way to show off an Escape! http://www.casitaclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11600&st=0

P.S. After checking out the video clip, I think I prefer greener pastures than Slab City.

Isn't this the area where a bunch of the story "Into the Wild" takes place? Seems like a place to visit for a dose of counter-culture (but perhaps not green grass and running water).

Kind-of crazy we were just there last week. We didn't stay there, just hung out at Salvation Mountain for an hour or two. The place is a cross between burning man (w/o the art) and a bad RV park.. Not too sure what the deal is at night when I'm sure it's quite different. I can post some photos if you guys wish.. the better place to stay is right on hwy 111 right on the Salton Sea there's a couple of sea side parks w/o hook-ups that are around $6.00/night.. very cool since it's right on the water..
