Here's my Casita overhead cabinet door holder modification. Door was about the same size as the one in a 21 that ETI said was too small for them to use gas shocks.

The spring hatch holder. From West Marine, catalog # 120030, Mfg. No. 0045-2, Hatch Support Spring, 8 1/2". Approx. $9 each, free shipping.

I REALLY appreciate this; thanks. We keep our DVD player in that small space and with this, my fingers can quit trying to be contortionists. Thanks!

Charlie/Dave - After purchasing this spring unit almost a year ago, I actually got around to (trying) to install it today. After reading the instructions carefully, I realized how specific they were about placement of the unit (even specifying which side the head of the rivet should face). Is it really necessary to be that precise? I figured that as long as the spring was fully extended when secured to the door and frame, it'd work. Just thought I'd ask before I started drilling holes. Thanks!

Lemme post a pic with measurements for the installation in my Escape 21. The spring will be straight when the door is open, then just push in the middle to make the spring fold and shut the door.

Thanks, Charlie. I'll look forward to your pictures.

Springy thingy

This marine hatch spring holds up the small door near the ceiling where ETI doesn't use a gas spring because there isn't a really small one on the market.

Left pic is the attachment to the opening door; the distance from the edge of the door on the hinge side to the center of the pivot is 3 1/4 inch.

Right pic is the other end of the spring where the center of the pivot is 3 1/2 inches from the face of the cabinet. In order to get this to align with the framing of the door I added a 1/4 inch thick piece of lath underneath a piece of 2x2 (actual measure is 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inch) fastened to the cabinet wall nearest the front of the trailer.

Hope this helps with the installs!

Two pictures are worth 2000 words! Thanks for taking the time to take the pics, Charlie; going to work on it now.
