Southernmost Escape

Picked up "Bess" our new 19 from Chilliwack on a rainy gray day and drove through some of Oregons worst weather ever. Drove through the redwoods of N. Calif. over the Golden Gate Bridge and through the heart of San Fran. Got stuck in traffic and a big detour which led us through Chinatown which is another long story. Camped out in San Diego to spend our life savings at Camping World. Across the border, visa, inspection, no problem.
If you've driven the Baja you know how narrow the road is and how close the 18 wheelers pass by and how there is no shoulder and how much of a shear and I mean shear drop-off there is.......well me made it. We passed by the former southernmost Escape in Mulege, Mexico according to the Escape map and here we are in Pescadero, Mexico. A village of just under 3,000 people.
"Bess" has been showered and waxed and is under her palapa and we have begun building an outdoor kitchen and bar around her.
An easy life for a Canadian Escape 19. She doesn't mind in fact she loves it and might be applying for Mexican Citizenship.

The road down Baja is very narrow and winding. When the big rigs approach sometimes I just had to close my eyes till they passed.

I feel your pain. There is a bridge across the Columbia river (WA to OR) that has the same effect on me. I am absolutely positive that one day exit that bridge of terror without my mirrors.

That has to be the nicest garage/car port/patio I have ever seen made for an Escape……very cool. How hard was it going thru 2 border crossings with an unregistered vehicle?

We brought the plates to Canada with us so it was no sweat at Sumas. We are vets at the Tijuana crossing. They looked inside to made sure there weren't cases of guns hidden and we were through in less than 5 minutes. Three military check points the 1000+ miles from Tijuana to Cabo which held us up just minutes. A wonderful drive and a very safe and beautiful area. We love it here.

I don't envy that drive. I recently took a trip through the Redwoods and was glad I didn't have Egbert with me.

That is just awesome ! Beautiful place ! We drove down part of highway about 45 1/2 years ago to Rosarito Beach when there was nothing there but a motel with some curtains or shutters in the windows - no glass ( closed for the winter - early March )- I here it has changed a lot ….. Way back then the boarder guards advised us not to go - lots of banditos…… but we were adventurous and very trusting ( or just plain naive )...…….

I'm just starting to figure this out so I don't know what road or really much about Baja except that it's supposed to have amazing beaches and be the safest part of Mexico. On this thread i saw something about scary roads with huge semis and then on another thread someone commented that northern California is worse and Baja isn't that bad. So basically I have to figure out which RV park to head for and how to get there and whether it would be hard on the trailer and hard on our nerves or whether after going up the mountain passes in the Rockies we would take Baja in our stride.

You may want to consider an Baja RV group tour for your first trip. Google Baja RV Tour for lots of info. We have only visited Baja via cruise ship with good safe experiences in all ports. Liked Loreto very much.

Life changes on a dime. We took Bess to San Diego recently and last Sunday a fire on a very windy day destroyed most of the RV park including all the trailers. We had just finished building a nice outdoor kitchen, bar and loft bedroom. Everything of ours was lost including a new Polaris 900cc Razor which you can see in the middle of the picture melted down to the frame. Sept.14 we went through a Cat. 3 hurricane with 125+ winds and were just recovering. First Bess escaped a hurricane and now a fire. She is a lucky Escape19.
