It takes a lot of reading of the Escape Forum to even know what questions to ask when having an Escape built. Understanding the possibilities has become an obsession with me, I admit. Here are some questions I asked Tammy today about our future Escape 19 and her very helpful answers. Her answers are in blue.

I'd love to read other email answers you guys have received directly from Rease and Tammy. Wouldn't it be helpful to collect them all in one topic?

Anyway, here's our exchange:

Hi Tammy,

More questions....

1. You said we'll be getting high-lift axle on the 19. Does that mean we automatically will be getting 15" wheels? The 19’ Escape comes standard with the high lift axle however there is not enough of a space between the two axles for the 15” tires.

2. Is the water heater LP and electric or just LP? If it's just LP, is an LP and electric available? The hot water tank comes standard as a LP operation. You can however request a two way hot water tank that will run off of 110V and LP the cost is $200.00

3. Are your customers happy with the color of the LED lights? There are two colors of LED lights available warm white which is similar to the natural light and cool white which is a light color.

4. Is there a 12V outlet standard on the inside of the camper? If so, where? The 12V outlet is an option $50 and you get to decide where it should be installed.

5. We recall you said there is a 120V outlet standard on the outside of the camper. Where is it? The 110V outlet is standard on the 19’ Escape and is on the passenger side between the exterior access hatch and rear wheel.

6. Is an electric tongue jack available? Should we consider one? Would it be reliable? The electric tongue jack is available $350. They are not very popular due to their expense but we have never had an issue with any of the ones we have installed.

7. What microwave (brand and model number) do you provide? Is it just set into the opening or is attached in some way? The microwave is made by Dometic model CDMW07W

8. A Forum poster wished the passenger-side window by the bed could open on the opposite side. Apparently they thought the awning would keep rain from coming in that window if it were reversed. Is this possible? The window cannot open in the opposite direction as the drain holes are at the factory. However there is a MaxxVent which is available for over the windows I am unsure of the cost however I can forward an email from the customer who purchased them so that you can see what they look like.

9. Have you and Rease had time to think about the large, openable window by the kitchen that we requested? If you recall, we plan to delete the range hood. I have spoken with Reace about the larger window and unfortunately the safety standards act will not allow a window over the stove. The reason being is that if someone installs a blind or a curtain over the window that we installed we are liable as a manufacturer. This does not mean that you cannot install a window after it is home.

10. We plan to tow with a 1996 half-ton Suburban. Do you recommend that we use an equalizing hitch? The Suburban should be more than capable of towing the Escape without an EQ hitch. When you pick up the trailer the EQ hitch is something that can be added at the last minute. As a general rule when you put about 200lbs on the back of the truck if it drops more than 2” then you will probably require an EQ hitch.

Since I preferred to have all black appliances in our 19 ft. Escape the brands are different.

We went with a cheap-o microwave, installed it in a cabinet and blocked it in place with 2 x 4s cut to size.

We were thinking about buying and installing our own substitute microwave but once again, I think Tammy and Rease have made a careful choice, and we've decided to stick with the microwave they have selected (the Dometic). To quote some info on the Camping World website, "Dometic's Microwaves are specifically designed for the RV, with rugged electronics to withstand travel vibrations."

No doubt. I wasn't questioning your decisions, just sharing our alternative. Enjoy your popcorn!

Dave

If I may offer a suggestion, be careful with the information the Escape folks gave to someone else in perhaps a different situation. Products change; what you learn today could be obsolete tomorrow. Those people are very accessible and it is easy to get a current reply to any question.

Marv

Dave, I wasn't questioning your decision either. Just trying to post some information about microwaves that never occurred to me before -- that there are microwaves specifically intended for RVs. The variety of opinions on this forum gives plenty of food for thought in the decision-making process, which is what is important.

Marv, you are right. No two situations are the same, and the Escape campers keep evolving. The important thing is that these posts make us aware of what questions are out there. For instance, I would have had no idea that the standard water heater is solely propane if somebody hadn't posted about that, and prompted me to verify the current state of things with Tammy.

Re: Water heater

Maybe an electric tankless water heater would be available.
But then again, everything in an RV has to be more
robust than household items.

My other 2012 trailer had a tankless water heater and it is a PIA. It comes on every time you turn on the hot water and runs long after you turn the water off. It is noisy, like some furnaces. When you shower, you adjust the temperature via flow rate, the slower the flow, the hotter and vice versa. Taking a shower meant hot and cold, never warm. I like the traditional water heater in use, it comes on maybe twice a day and it is silent and you have warm or cold or hot water in the shower.

In the all mighty quest for better things I have to say the water heater which is used in most rvs is ushually preyy reliable and works very well in my opinion. some times its just best not to mess with something that works well.
