The Chilliwack Dash

It was 76F (24.4Celsius) here in north Texas today. 70 now. Not happening in Iowa much less Canada. Snowshoes for you all!

Hope Jasper approved of the new Escape.

Aieeeah!! Three days into our 2000 mile trip (we routed around all of the snow zones - at least that was the theory) for our orientation scheduled for Friday. Have sent an enquiry to ETI, but I'm pretty sure that's not happening. Fortunately, we can hang around for a while.

Jim, if you really have good karma, please call for the mother of all Chinooks. Do they have those in that part of Canada?

I hope the weather clears in Chilliwack and the roads are open between there and here. I believe they are scheduled to load our new 21' on their delivery trailer sometime soon to start heading this way with it. Woohoo!!

Stan,
Would you please comment about your earlier pickup date. Looks like you moved up a month or so.

Secondly, would you give a report on your non-towing fuel mileage on your diesel Canyon, including your driving style and your general thoughts on that vehicle. In addition to my current tow vehicle, I have a Jetta TDI and really enjoy my diesels, despite the hoopla.

I would bet by Friday the roads would be well cleared, and that is really the main consideration for you. They are still supposed to get some snow and rain, but warming up for Thursday and Friday, but only time will tell with the weather.

That area does not get the Chinooks Winds like we do in Calgary (leeward side of the Rockies), but they have MUCH higher average temps in the winter. This year is definitely an anomaly for them.

From Wiki: "Chinook wind...in the interior West of North America, where the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains meet various mountain ranges, although the original usage is in reference to wet, warm coastal winds in the Pacific Northwest" and "A strong Chinook can make snow one foot (30 cm) deep almost vanish in one day."

Maybe the name has changed (I hear Pineapple Express now, too) but we still call them Chinooks down our way.

Our weather people call warm winds a Chinook. A Pineapple Express means heavy, heavy rain is coming, typically from the southwest direction.

Our completion date was moved from Mar 8 to Jan 25 as part of the adjustments ETI made last October.

I will start a new thread on the towing forum to respond to questions about the Canyon diesel.

Tammy reports that she expects to be able to export our trailer on schedule Friday. Histrionics aside, the only concern we actually ever had was that deliveries might get backed up a few days.

Here on the west coast a Chinook is a type of salmon!!!

They are almost as good as the warm winds off the east side of the Rockies.

Our friend Jack Gladstone sings The Bear Who Stole the Chinook. It's a fun song and posted on you tube. If you are ever in Glacier in the summer don't miss his show.
In Iowa we call the 5 or 6 inch snow out of the NW an Alberta Clipper. If it really rolls through with a lot of wind and little snow it's a Saskatchewan Screamer.
We will get a nice warmup in the winter once in a while but it's not really a Chinook

Really like these regional names. Although infrequent, we get a frigid northeaster once in awhile and call it an Alberta Express.

Cold winds here from the interior are called Arctic Outflows.
That's usually when we usually get the blue sky and very cold temperatures in winter.

I blame it on the cold outflow from the Peace River Country (my place of birth and first 19 years of experiences), hardly the Arctic.
We blame Alberta for other things!!

Did you ever hear Baxter Black do " Oscar, King of the Beavers? It's a poem based on an adventure of a young man in the Peace River Country.

Congratulations!!! We are thinking about Osoyoos, but haven't as yet made plans. Hope we see you guys again!
All the best!
Happy trails!

HI Charlie and Lucy,

Thanks for the kind words.

I have had my grandson here for the last 9 days (he left moments ago) and some work to do on job, but hope to get at the trailer in a week or two to get some stuff done on it.

It would be fantastic to see you guys again, hopefully in Osoyoos, or somewhere on the road, as we plan to do a lot of travelling with our trailer. :)

No Dave. I have not heard of either the poem or the poet.
I looked him up tonight and got carried away reading and listening to some cowboy poetry.Great stuff.
Thanks for asking.
