The NEXUS Program

For sure you have to be careful what you try taking into the US as far as food is concerned. Coming into Canada we often have groceries and are never asked what kinds of food.

Just three days ago I made the mistake of saying we were going to church and a "pot luck" lunch but said we had no food. Well, suddenly we happened to be randomly selected for search. Pulled into garage three agents checked the car and one asked "who packed the food." My mind reeled for a second wondering what I had left in the trunk then again said we have no food. The intent was to go to a grocery store in the US before church knowing the sticky food rules. They also handed us a sheet outlining what is and isn't allowed into the US for food.

We would consider Nexus but usually always land crossing and our Nexus lanes are open only two hours weekday mornings to US and two hours afternoons coming back.

You don't think the word "pot" in pot luck had anything to do with the search? ???

Imagine the shock my kids experienced, when about the ages of 7 and 9, and while looking for Christmas gift ideas, entered a search for "Boy Toys", and ended up on a gay porn site.

Fortunately no lasting trauma, and at 24 and 26 now, we do joke about it. :)

They seem to be steadily increasing hours of operation etc. I get updates about expanded hours etc. and here, near a major city, they've even added extra lanes.

Also, even at the regular booth, handing over a Nexus card seems to result in a quick "have a nice day".:)

hi linda nexus and the trailer are no problem at the border. just have to watch for the items that are not allowed eg fruits . however not all border crossings have nexus. also they open only during certain hours. your best bet is to do a little research on the issue. go to or write border services for their pamphlets. i have belonged for a long time and i tell you it saves a lot of time.

hi ron i don't know what border you cross that has nexus open the hours you mention. the peace arch crossing going into the states is open 7 am-- 9 pm. coming back to canada it is open until midnight.

Ron was quoting me...our crossing EmersonMB/PembinaND, despite being the busiest land crossing east of the peace arch crossing until you hit ON, only has those limited hours.

NEXUS Highway (NEXUS/HWY) | Directory of CBSA Offices | Canada Border Services Agency lists the Canada/U.S. land border crossings with NEXUS service, each linked to an information page with hours of operation. For instance, Adrian's Emerson crossing shows those times of only a couple of peak hours in each direction.

The Peace Arch crossing is called "Douglas" in this list.

The hours may be worth considering when travel planning. On the other hand, I suppose if the NEXUS lane isn't open, it's probably not a busy time...
