Didn't want to be off topic, so I started a new thread instead of posting to View from Rear Window.
Being retired, I shot this picture from my zero gravity chair on site at Qualicum First Nation Campground near Qualicum Bay. There are eagles, gulls, seals, numerous other birds and some flying ants here. Leslie claimed she saw a whale.
We have water and power and there is a free sani-dump on site for $35 a night.
Ferry fare to get to the island, tug and trailer and two seniors ( midweek ) was $161.

We are waiting till I retire (hopefully next year) and plan to spend a good stretch of time on the Island. We'll be asking you for CG reviews.

Good picture

Great shot!

Great story and wonderful picture! We can imagine you relaxing in the sunshine with this scene in front of you! It doesn't get much better than this!

Discount is 50 per cent on the passenger fare midweek only. You pay full fare for the vehicle and trailer ( mine is 35 feet total ). I think we saved maybe $11.

Oh ....had thought that seniors get a discount over all ....not just the personal . We knew that fares had gone up since our last trip , but if $161. were with a seniors discount on the whole fare -then one might expect well over two hundred for sure ...so for us at least good news that the discount is only on the personal . Thanks

A few years ago we took BC Ferries Discovery Coast Connector. It is their summer service between Port Hardy and Mid Coast ports Bella Bella, Shearwater, Klemtu, Ocean Falls and Bella Coola. The stops are interesting. The ferry even stopped and shone the search light on Mackenzie's Rock. The atmosphere on the little ferry is fun. From Bella Coola we drove to Williams Lake camping alone the way. Just us and the night sky.

Just read some info about Alex Mackenzie, completely unknown to me. Sort of like the Lewis and Clark genre down here in the lower 48, thanks for the link.

Jim must go to this link . That is my maiden name . My father was Gorden MacKenzie born in Ottawa. Pat

Just checked out the link . Thank you again .When I was a kid in school I was ashamed of my name and wanted to hide it . Kids made fun of my name . I think there was a program on tv at the time called the Mackenzie raiders , kids would say here comes the MacKenzie raiders etc.Today I am very proud of my name and would never hide it . I get very excited for any information concerning my name . Pat

"Drive" is a bit of an understatement. That hill out of Bella Coola is quite a climb. Spectacular scenery.
Yes it is a very steep hill. At the time we were there, the locals pointed out that it may be steep but no one had been killed on it. I guess every one is forced to pay keen attention to their driving hence no accidents.

I think the locals are right, no one dies on the hill, its usually in the valley where they land when they fly off the road.

A few years back I heard a presentation on construction safety by a Worksafe BC Rep who had just returned from Singapore (I think). He had asked the superintendent of a high rise building how many workers died every week since they were working at enormous heights with no fall protection. The superintendent said they had experienced no deaths but that every week there were 2-3 "fliers" who were buried with honour and great ceremony.

I'm driving "The Hill" this afternoon to go to a work site. Its not a big deal if you go slow---its just hard to slow down when you've been on the road all day. One day I'd like to return to Bella Coola with nothing to do but fish all day and photograph the grizzlies. I'm currently staying at the Rip Rap Campsite (in a non-Escape:ermm:). Its a little piece of paradise in a beautiful valley.

I keep expecting to see pictures, of the views, of various sites on this thread.

Well, it started out that way, but as I recall, GBaglo didn't want to go off topic. :) But I enjoy the way the conversation winds around

If you google RIP Rap Campsite it shows photos of the surroundings. We also stayed at that campsite. Great hosts. They even gave us a basket of produce from their garden. The only photos we have from that trip are glued in an album.
