Threaded inserts or big screws?

I just ordered a Lagun table mount. I need to reinforce the back of the U-shaped dinette to mount it. I am going to use some heavy duty shelf brackets and 3/4" plywood as others have done.

To anchor into the floor under the bench would threaded inserts or just plain big old wood screws be best? If inserts what type? I see brass, cast, etc. Wood workers chime in please.

(I am a big fan of overkill.)

It may be overkill, but if you're sure there is nothing under the floor in that area, I'd consider drilling all the way through the floor and using bolts with big heavy duty fender washers to spread the stress across a broader area of the wood flooring and lock nuts so nothing vibrates loose.

Could use the same bolts, maybe, to mount a TP holder there.

I believe the fresh water tank is under there....go for the 8" lag bolts and you will never have to worry about cleaning or sanitizing your fresh water tank......

It depends. If you are going to install the screw once, a wood screw works fine. If you are going to remove/replace the screw often, something like a "E-Z LOK" would be advised. Brass is soft, Zinc crumbles - I tend to use SS inserts as they hold up well.

for threading a bolt into plywood, I've used t-nuts, like these. you drill the plywood oversize, and use small (#8?) wood screws to secure the t-nut flange to the opposite side of the board than the bolt will be threaded in from...

these come in various sizes, ones I last used were like 3/8-16 or something. note, there's another variety of t-nut that has 3 prongs you hammer into the wood instead of the screw holes, those will NOT work with plywood

These thread inserts came from Home Depot. The wide flanged threads are far stronger than screw threads. Put masking tape on the drill 1/2" up to avoid drilling past the plywood.

They take a 3/16" 10-24 machine screw which is shown as an installing tool and projecting from the base before shorter machine screws were installed.
