I have installed a TPMS to monitor my trailer tire pressures. I keep my tire pressure at 50 psi. How low can I let it go before I add more air? 45?
Note I am not a perfectionist, but I want to stay safe.

Someone will post a chart of carrying capacity of tires at various pressures. Knowing your trailer weight (loaded) should allow you to make the decision on pressure that you are comfortable with. Some owners tow with more than 50 psi, some less.

I knew it existed but didn’t think it through very well. Nothing new about that . Was in Oelwein Iowa a couple days ago. Used to be a railroad town with a Chicago Northwestern shop there. They have preserved the depot and have a steam locomotive, tender and caboose on display. Haven’t been to the museum, waiting for you to come out so I’d know what I’m looking at.

Did not quite get up to Cresco, Iowa where there’s a Milwaukee Road locomotive and a beautiful masonry restroom in the park. A true brick S…house.

One might consider the intended role of a TPMS.
  • Is it to substitute for the regular and frequent routine of checking and maintaining proper cold-tire pressure?
  • Or, is it to warn of loss of pressure while underway?
I practice the former with a hand-held tire gauge / portable compressor, so for me it's the latter.

Therefore, I set my adjustable TPMS low-warning only slightly (~2psi) below the cold-morning, cold-tire pressure I consider optimal. That way my attention is drawn to the tire condition at a pressure hopefully pre-emptive of a more serious problem when underway - I can then mute the alarm but keep an eye on that tire's monitor to discern if there is indeed a problem that suggests it's prudent to pull-over and investigate.

Yes, that can mean seasonally adjusting the TPMS alarms (easy on my TPMS, in my region the daily range of ambient temperatures can be significant in some seasons).

YMMV.
