Trailer backup cameras

HI All! Well Sorry, butI think I have another Noob question. In trying to finalize My build sheet, I think I want a backup camera on My new E23. The lady that is helping Me configure the options on My build did not seem to know the answers to My questions concerning trailer cameras. I have a 2024 Chevy 3500 with the surround camera system. On the rear bumper are connections for up to two trailer cameras. My question is, if I buy the camera that Escape offers as an option, do I need to have a separate monitor for this camera? I don’t think so, as the views of the camera will come up on the vehicles in-dash monitor. There are controls for those camera views on the vehicles camera views. Also, if I purchase the rear camera for the trailer from escape, do I need the 12 volt wire drop option also? It says that there would be a conflict between the two options, so I am assuming that the camera comes with it’s own wiring, and that this 12 volt drop wire would be for a rear camera that escape did not provide, and that You would install at a later date? Hate to be so nitpicky here, but just trying to make sure We get the right equipment built into the trailer. Thank You for Your time!

Get the make and model of the camera that Escape is installing these days. and then check your trucks owners manual and or dealership for compatibility. Our trailer is older now and technology is always changing, usually improving but our backup camera has it's own wireless display and that's the only thing it will connect to.

We are waiting for Toyota who is coming out with their own wireless camera system that will be able to display on our digital rear view mirror or the big dash screen.

I wouldn't assume anything will work with your truck unless Chevy says it will work. It sound to me though since you said there are connections at the rear bumper of your truck for two cameras that what you need is a wired not wireless camera. Maybe new cameras have a wired connection and wireless?

And it sounds right that the camera wire drop would be for the owner to install their own camera. If you buy the camera option from escape you would not need that wire drop.

I can only give you one piece of info about your camera and wiring:

We ordered the 12V drop for the backup camera. Eight years later, when I got around to installing a camera, I wanted an always-on rear view camera. The 12V drop was only powered when the truck was in reverse. I had to find power from the interior wiring to the taillights.

I don't think the ESCAPE installed camera image will appear on your GM Infotainment screen. GM does offers a camera system that is compatible. If you do a search of "GM camera systems" the GM parts website will appear somewhere. It will show their compatible systems that will appear on the Infotainment screen. . I would also do a YouTube search of "GM Trailer Cameras". I had the Furrion camera system installed on my ESCAPE and was disappointed. I wish I had not had it installed. I recently had my local GMC dealer install a camera system on my truck that included the side mirror cameras plus a trailer camera and they function pretty much like the GM Surround system with the exception of the overhead view. The screen with three images below has the trailer image on the bottom with the left and right mirror camera images above. I can select on the Infotainment screen to display a full screen trailer image.

Interesting, they changed that at some point, our 2018 5.0s camera is powered whenever the vehicle lights are on.

Thank You for Your response. I did go to the Chevy dealership. I got a clerk that couldn’t be bothered to go ask Anyone. Maybe go back later. Do You expect service, just because You bought an $80,000.00 truck? Seems like Everything is going that way these days!

Thank You for the info! I guess I need to do a lot more research on this before I go for this Escape option. Seems like this is overly complicated. I do know that there is a Camera that will work with the trucks screen. Whether Escape will want to install that camera or not remains to be seen.

I'm not sure which model you have but they are available for certain models. This is for the 3500 extended cab. Also there are two different display/infotainment systems and this might not work with yours but worth checking. If this works for you I would have it installed by the GM dealer and not Escape. You can order from GM to be delivered and installed by the dealer.

Thank You for the link! I did check online and there is definitely a GM Backup camera, that works with My trucks infotainment system. I think I would rather go that way, instead of having another monitor on the dash of the truck. Thank You All for all of the input. At least now I kind of know what to do.

Keep in mind that with the additional monitor for you trailer camera, can still have you navigation and other stuff on the vehicle infotainment screen at the same time. If you route everything to your main screen, you can only view one or two things at a time

The link You sent is exactly what fits My truck, and there is even in stock at My local Chevy dealership. The same one that couldn’t be bothered to go look? Anyway, I put in an inquiry to Escape to see if They would install this before They skin the interior of the trailer. I will ask, but I suspect that the GM dealer probably won’t want to install the camera and wire in My new camper trailer? Maybe Who knows. I will just need to go ask. Thanks again for that link, I really appreciate it.

Looking at the wiring I'm thinking this could be a complete outside the trailer install. Cable routed under the trailer.

This install is on a 2020 but I think it would be a similar install on the 2024.

I mostly want this unit for backing the trailer up, or keeping track of traffic behind Me. You can’t believe how some people drive these days. I really don’t want another monitor.

A vote for the GM integrated cam

I use a similar Ford Accessory integrated trailer rear-view cam on my F150. Displaying on my truck's OE 12" infotainment screen, I absolutely love it. Toggle between the trailer rear cam view and navigation or whatever else is easy and I've never found the inability to view different things 'concurrently' to be any issue at all.

As you recognized, the minor 'compromises' (if any?) are overwhelmingly offset by not messing with any extra aftermarket display, cords, etc. in my truck cab. Hitch and plug-in the trailer umbilicals (total of 2 in my case, the usual trailer cord + the Ford trailer-cam cord) and you're on your way.

If GM like Ford also offers a trailer TPMS integrated in the truck dash displays, go for that too, it's icing on the cake! :)

Hi John Webb,

To answer your question about the backup camera.

If ETI is still using the Furrion backup camera that came with my 2023 21 ne that I took delivery on 9/11/2023 on your new trailer, then I would say that it will not be compatible with your GM.

The camera is wireless for audio and video. The wiring that is at the camera is of two wires. Ground wire, and a power wire. The monitor that comes with the system has a lighter plug for inside your vehicle. The monitor pairs to the rear camera and it is unique by unit. Mean, that if you had two Furrion monitors and wanting to say have one in the tow vehicle and one inside the trailer for security , this would not happen cause the camera is only going to pair to one or the other of the monitors. Because of the unique codes set in each monitor.

There is no hard wiring for you to receive audio or visual through the 7 way plug.

ETI will power the backup camera from the marker lights at the rear. No power drop needed, unless you request to have one in that area.

So in my trials and errors along the way and if ETI is using the same Furrion backup camera. The answer is no it will not handshake with your GM system.

None the less, when backing, you need all the visual you can get if you don't have a go spotter.

Hope this helps.

Cheers to ya........ and Happy Trails........... Jack

:thumb: For sure!

As a solo traveler I always stop and carefully 'walk / scout / plan' before backing. The truck's towing mirrors, '360-degree' cams, and trailer rear-view cam serve as invaluable aids absent that active spotter-on-the-ground.

You can say that again. I'm getting the same kind of attitude at the local service station, that I've used for 40 years. The business has been sold and the old guard is changing. They are getting new, younger ppl at the front desk that seem to have no initiative.
