Anyone here been to Baja lately or wanting to go? I had planned to spend this winter there but all the security issues scared me off.
I did travel extensively in Baja in 2007 and had no problems whatsoever, but things have changed since then. Biggest difference for me was back then I was driving a Sportsmobile 4x4 van. I felt pretty invincable in that, but even so had a serious breakdown and had to limp back to the states with rear diff sounding like it was gonna explode at any minute. But I still got to travel most of the penninsula and spent 3 months there and had really no bad experiences with the locals or law enforcement. The military checkpoints were pretty intimadating, especially the first one I encountered, but after that they seemed pretty routine.
I really would like to go again if the violence simmers down, hopefully next year. Anybody intersted in a caravan? Much safer in a group.
