I just found out I need about $15k in extensive dental work. Just turned 70, crowns failing and an implant needed. In the pasr, 15 years ago for some similar work, I went to Los Algodones (just across the border from Yuma, AZ) based on referrals from some friends. They had received lots of dental care there at about 20% of normal stateside rates. I experienced the same, excellent work at great rates. I’m concerned about crossing into Mexico and successfully returning to the US in the current political environment. Interested in any current experiences folks are having getting into and back from Mexico. Any advice out there from experienced traveler’s out there?

In February of this year I went to Nuevo Progreso Mex, which is near Harlingen TX. It is also a major dental center. Everything there was fine, the same as in the past with respect to crossing the border and safe access to the clinics. Park in a lot on the US side and walk over the bridge.

You might be disappointed if you're expecting those kind of rates. Last time that I checked there, about 4 years ago, the rates were still good but not that type of bargain.

Crossing for dental work is so mainstream now I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I've been into Mexico many times for dental and other needs. Los Algodones is fine but the lines to reenter the US can be brutal at times. I live in Benson and now have a dentist I use in Naco. Very different from Los Algodones. Naco used to be a medium sized bustling border town but apparently the Covid thing was a disaster for them. The park I stay in recommended a dentist there and I gave it a shot. I'll have to say I was intimidated at my first crossing. On the US side everything, mostly is vacant and boarded up. You can park on the street one block from the crossing. Once in Mexico it gets very scary looking. My dentist is a few blocks in. There seem to be maybe five or six dental centers my sparsely used. My experiences there have been all good. The dentist, a family operation that has apparently been there for many years, was clean and professional. Prices are much cheaper than at Al Godones. The receptionist there told me there was no danger in town so I did some exploring. Very poor and run down but everyone was friendly. In Al Godones you are constantly being approached for sales and services. I don't mind that and have talked to a lot of very nice Mexican vendors and street hawkers there but it's a different enviroment and can be intimidating. Naco the streets are mostly deserted and nobody pays you any mind even though you may be obviously a gringo with cash. There are a few good (reported) restaurants and bars in a few blocks. I don't eat or drink out so didn't go there but my friend did and had a great meal. In the stores nobody even speaks english so you are on your own in that department. Coming back across the border is only congested with officials, no returning crowds. I've never had to wait, even for a minute, in a line to get back out. Different and not everyone's cup of tea but it works for me. If you want to shop and buy booze and such Los Algodones is the place.
