Find the listing for national forests. Then overlay their boundaries along your route . Then by district bump up the campgrounds and read the descriptions especially the distance off the main highway going by and decide how far off the beaten paths you want to get. That’s what we do anyway. Haven’t exactly been the way you’re describing since we started escaping. We usually cross Idaho between Orofino, Kamiah, Kooskia, up the Lochsa over the Lolo pass and onto Missoula.
