USAA Financing Not Possible?

rbryan4, Are you sure about this? I actually called and talked to a rep and was approved. She said that I would have to pay in US dollars, but out side of that, they would simply send me a check to take up to Canada with me when I pick up the trailer.
Yes, I'm sure. I was "approved" by USAA as well. When I tried to finalize and fund the loan was when I found out their system doesn't have the ability to process a loan from an international dealer. It only allows for US dealers.

There is quite a bit of misinformation given to the borrower depending on who you talk to. Many of them don't know that their system won't process an international rv loan.

Also, there's a bit of a problem with the scenario you mentioned even if they did fund it. Taking a check to ETI when you pick up might work, but remember that the payment is due when the trailer is completed -- and that may be weeks before you pick it up, as in our case.

You Sir are correct :( they offered me a "Personal" loan at an insulting rate... Im using a home equity line of credit instead.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to provide an update in case anyone else is wondering about financing an Escape through USAA.

As of today, USAA [still] will not finance any vehicle purchased outside of the United States. (Even though Escape Trailer is represented in the NADA manual, they just won't do it.)

We chose the financing that Escape provided for ease of transaction then later switched to our local credit union. It seemed the simplest way to do it and worked out great.

Bit of a bummer today. I had intended to use USAA to finance my loan but their software doesn't allow the loan to be processed if the manufacturer/dealer address is in Canada -- a problem that apparently several others on the forum have reported. Everything else lined up perfectly, but unless they have a US address (even a PO Box would work), the loan can't be finalized. Guess I'll have to go with another lender. Color me BUMMED.:(

Anyone have a good experience and a low rate with another lender who will write loans for a Canadian manufacturer? Feel free to share. Thanks.
It doesn't surprise me. I also bank with USAA and while their online software is top notch, a lot of their business practices are third world stuff. They told me that they won't even send a certified check to anywhere but your home address on file, and even if you "expedite" it, it can take them 3-5 days to get you the check. It's ridiculous.

FWIW, campers are in my 'toy' category, I've always paid cash, never borrowed for them. I've done low interest car loans for a new car, never for a used car, but I think the last one of those was in 1989, for a 1989 Jetta GLi 16v commuter car. No, wait, 2001 Ford E150 'Traveler' passenger van, Ford had a $0 down, 0% 4 year loan at end of year on '01s. I had the cash for it, but I said to heck with it, and invested it in my retirement funds. That was the last vehicle loan I think we've done. We paid cash (or check) for ...
  • 2016 Mercedes E350 wagon (in 2020) (wife's daily driver)
  • 2019 Ford Expedition (in late 2023)
and former cars in no particular order
  • 1994 Mercedes E320 wagon (wife's daily)
  • 1993 Mercedes 300E Cabriolet (my daily)
  • 2004 Toyota Camry (daughter's ex rolled it on I80 in Nevada)
  • 2016 Prius V for my wife's sister in New England
  • 2002 F250 diesel (former tow vehicle)
  • 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon that was my daily driver for many years
  • 2008 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 extended cab, that was our tow before the F250 *and* my daily driver for awhile.
i'm skipping some really old cars from way back, like the 1966 VW Squareback I drove in the late 70s, or the 1971 TR-6 roadster my wife had in the mid 80s.

I was also disappointed with USAA not being willing to finance my Escape as it is from an "international" dealer (especially since they are more then happy to insure it).

I went with Essex Credit Corp. Decent loan rate & terms and Tammy has worked with them several times.
