Wow - all exports temporarily suspended

Thanks Greg and Teresa,
We have been checking our email multiple times each evening hoping to hear good news. We haven't yet gotten this last report. Thank you for posting it. So far our pickup plans have not had to change, but we are getting down to the wire for having to cancel reservations, etc. Hopefully, we will hear soon that all is well.

I keep waiting for that next email stating that they are in compliance and exports are starting back, because ours is supposed to go out on the first delivery truck after that. But so far, have not gotten it.

Arrrg - I hate our government - and I'm not being political

The latest email from Tammy, and I will just let her words speak for me or I WILL become political. How can you be exporting trailers for 11 years and then all of a sudden you cant because two agencies can't agree on things....

"Hello Greg,

Yes, I did check the mail today….and I am still an unhappy camper. The day started off pretty rocky with an email from NHSTA stating I have now begun my 4 week wait time which I was not happy to see. It ended this afternoon with multiple phone calls and emails being exchanged with the slight promise of a letter by the end of the week. – I will let you know as soon as I can.

Please feel free to forward any questions you may have."

Can anyone explain here why it takes bureaucrats so long to get a little paperwork done? Makes you wonder how long they sit on the toilet. Loren

They don't care about businesspeople, and truth be told many of them have a lot of bias and even contempt for them.

Boy, to those affected it must seem like a slow motion nightmare.

Hard to imagine what seems to be a deliberate no goodwill situation.

Beginning a 4 week wait now?

I think they just do not have a grip on how timelines affect people. I have seen this in all levels of government. They expect that the requests they issue are simple, one just needs to follow procedure and get results. The problem is that not only is the procedure often difficult to follow, but it takes a lot of time to go through all the phases.

I thought I hear some kind of explosion west of here, it musta been Tammy just blowing off steam.

We are on our 14th day chilling in Chilliwack waiting for this to get resolved. We have gone by ETI and talked to Tammy every few days. She was at her wits end today. She looked at me and told me not to cry because if I did, she'd break down, too. Neither of us cried, but we were both on the verge. We sure appreciate all the work that Tammy has done to try to get this problem fixed.

Hopefully Escape can continue production and not run out of storage room. Just think how good a sales month September will be......:)

Hi: dmetz... So sorry you're "Caught in the middle". This whole mess just shows a lack of regard of "Goober mints" for the public at large. They really are there to protect themselves. Alf

As previously noted:
Close... in case anyone is interested, it is Part 565, rather than Part 566
In NHTSA's online Manufacturer's Information Database (MID), a search in WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) information in the SAE database for "Name contains 'Escape Trailer Industries' AND Country contains 'Canada'" finds Escape (with the expected values of 2E9 for the WMI and 068 for the small manufacturer ID), but the result is flagged with an exclamation mark...
The ! indicates that this WMI may not currently be registered with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through 49 CFR 565 (proper VIN code accepted and posted) as on-road vehicles.
... which is essentially what Sarah said in her note, and matches the result from a test in the VIN Decoder.

The good news is that as of today the result in the same query is flagged with a check mark...
The <checkmark> indicates that this WMI has been registered with NHTSA 565 process, includes the most current data available, and self-certified by the manufacturer as meeting the minimum safety requirements for importation, registration and use on U.S. for models and model years indicated by the manufacturer within the 565. Data associated to this WMI has been included within the dataset for vPIC for use by the public, which includes decoding and general specifications for standard equipment.

For a sample Escape VIN (a recently built new-style 21'), NHTSA's VIN Decoder now works. It doesn't know much - and most of the items would not apply to a trailer anyway - but from over a hundred items of details, mostly blank, it does know...
Code:
[B]Group Name Element Value[/B]
Exterior / Body Body Class Trailer
Exterior / Trailer Trailer Type Connection Ball Type Pull
Exterior / Trailer Trailer Body Type Travel Trailer
Exterior / Trailer Trailer Length (feet) 20
General Make ESCAPE
General Manufacturer Name ESCAPE TRAILER INDUSTRIES LTD.
General Model Escape Trailer Industries Ltd.
General Model Year 2016
General Plant City Chilliwack
General Vehicle Type TRAILER
General Plant Country Canada
General Plant State British Columbia
General Manufacturer Id 15617
Mechanical / Drivetrain Axles 2

I think the "Manufactuer Id" is interesting - it is not part of the VIN, and is not the World Manufacturer ID, but has been looked up from within a database that Escape Trailer Industries was apparently not in earlier.

Just got an email from Tammy saying that she received confirmation from NHSTA that ETI may resume importing trailers into the US. Yay!!! She is awaiting confirmation from Customs to be sure ETI is showing in their system.

OH HOW VERY EXCITING. AND YES, I'M YELLING!

Finally one of the (too many) worries are maybe off of Tammy's plate now. Congrats to everyone awaiting their trailer during all this.

Woohoo, according to my email from Tammy, deliveries will restart next Tuesday, 8/16 with deliveries to Texas, then ours and then Florida!!! How the heck can a stinking government agency first be saying 4 weeks, then "maybe" the end of this week, then today...crazy. But I'm glad its over
