Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

Does anybody have one of these scales and if so have an opinion?

Glenn:

I don't have one of these -- just used a bathroom scale which worked quite well. Our scale is an electronic scale. You need to apply the load fairly quickly but gently. I did this by using some blocks and a bottle jack rather than using the hitch jack. The tongue weight on our little trailer is only 200 pounds which is within the range of a bathroom scale.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

I have one and I think it's great. It is most valuable when you get a new trailer or when you change the way you load your trailer. Once you get a feel for how your trailer reacts to different weights in different locations, it is less useful. I will be using mine quite a bit when I pick up my new Escape 19 this spring but I suspect that I won't use it much after the first year.

That was my experience. I used it quite a bit the first summer. After that; not so much.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

Well, I bought the Sherline scale and even read the manual.

Today, I measured the tongue weight and got 300 lbs. Dry weight of the 17B is 2,100 lbs and I'm guessing what it weighs loaded. I figure, I'm probably in the ballpark of 10 - 15 per cent of total weight at 300 lbs.

Of course I'll have to do it all again once we load up for a trip. Have to add generator, BBQ, chairs, food, and beer of course.

Last time I weighed the trailer ( hitched to the RAV ) I got 2,816 lbs. on the trailer axle. According to the Sherline manual, you add the tongue weight from the scale reading to that to get the total weight - 3,116 llbs.

Might have to move a couple cast-iron pans forward.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

Remember to weigh that tongue on a level area and make sure the trailer is level. With the torsion axles that Escape uses you can skew your results.

That weight shifts after loading too much to count on.

I have been seriously considering getting that scale, where did you pick it up Glenn?

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

I ordered from etrailer.com
Actually, I got two, one for me and one for Keath for his 19'.
I asked if they were available from their Ontario warehouse and they were so were shipped from there. I figured it would be OK to go by UPS since package wasn't crossing the border. Ended up on FedEx ( they must have some arrangement with UPS ).
Cost was $123.50 each and $44.39 shipping for the pair. Ordered Sunday and got them on Friday.

If they were going to ship from U.S. I would have specified USPS.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

I have used etrailer.com a couple times. Great company to deal with. I never realized that they had a Canadian warehouse.

And you are right, UPS nationally is fine, it just sucks big time for international.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

Not all products are available from the Ontario warehouse so you have to do a phone order, not online.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

Which model did you get? Just wondering if the lower capacity models give a more accurate reading.

Re: Sherline Trailer Tongue Scale

I got the 2,000 lb. model. I didn't and don't see any others offered on etrailer.com, but the manual says that you can use any hydraulic pressure gauge that reads in psi ( which you read as pounds - 200psi is 200lbs. )
I gather that the 1,000 lb. and 3,000 lb. scales are the same except for the gauge. You can order a different gauge from Sherline.
You get the most accurate reading in the middle of the range ( at 1,000 lbs. for the 2,000 lb model ). Sherline says the gauge is accurate to 2 per cent in the middle and 3 per cent at the extreme high or low readings.
I suspect that this tiny difference is why etrailer.com doesn't stock the 1,000 and 3,000 lb models.

Re: 17 eh Trailer Tongue Scale

Not having a scale at hand I modified a very cheap 2 ton bottle jack. Works great, lift anything a mm and you have the weight. It requires multiplying with a constant to suit the piston dia. There was lots of room in the iron base for a 1/4" NPT to suit the gauge.
Tongue weight turned out to be very light so I will shift the load.
