RML8555 Replacement by Dometic

Friday, I got the email from ETI to proceed with my replacement.

Today I talked to both Dometic (Al McGuire - 800-544-4881) and ETI (Chrystal.) It sounds like Dometic has not yet entered the data from ETI in the serial number database, so the service folks can do nothing.

ETI will work with Dometic and email us again when we should contract Dometic.

Good to know. I received a similar response from Dometic this morning as well.

That was my experience to plus further frustrated by the fact that no one my local service center talk to from Dometic even heard of a recall for this refrigerator.

I'm under the impression this is not a "recall" in the normal NHTSA recall on cars or prior refer fire recall units, but more of a concession from Dometic to appease Escape and those with issues. I doubt there is a numbered recall, perhaps a tech advice or some other memo will be disseminated.

Jim,
Yes I agree that this is probably not a normal recall for a product. But it's just funny how in big business that left hand doesn't know what the right hand doing.

There seems to be a bit more work involved on Dometics' side to get things ironed out. Jim is correct, this is not a recall on the fridges, rather a goodwill move for their customer. The right hand needs a couple more days to talk things out with the left hand.

Will provide more information shortly.

Has anyone heard a 'deadline' to accept this swap 'offer'?

Are 'we' convinced that it work significantly better on propane with no air conditioning (boondocking)?

We are debating if I should get our name on the replacement list now or if we can wait and see how other folks like it, and the overall cost of swapping.

I think that's a good approach Klem. Find out what the total cost is to swap it out. I can tell you that we boondocked in warm weather with no AC and the fridge performed well: 37F to 38F on a setting of 4 out of 5. AC didnt seem to make any difference, but outside ambient temps did.

Absolutely get your name on the list for an replacement refrigerator . You can always say no if things get too expensive and I got a feeling we still have a lot of time before any of this going to take place .

I agree, I specifically asked Tammy about not submitting my name until the end of this hot season so I can give it a good test. She said she will still gather the info but that she was not aware of any time frame or limit.

And I want to again express my gratitude to Reace and ETI for going WAY above and beyond ANY other manufacturer for us.

We are going for the 2 door fridge earlier rather than later.

Based on our experience in the southwest during February and March, I think it would be hard for the fridge to perform worse than the RML8555. In order to keep the temperature under 40 We had to keep the fridge on "5" even when the outside temps were only in the 60s during the day and the high 30s, low 40s during the night. Apparently the new fridge has a larger cooling unit and some additional fans. So we put our name in with Escape and are waiting to see what happens. I know that Jim reported a broken hinge at the TN rally. Our hope is that was a rare occurance and if we are careful to not have too much in the door it won't be a problem for us.

With any luck, we can get the fridge replaced after the rally, when we are taking The Skylark back to Escape to have the floor of the dinette raised.

Ditto that; except we'll being doing the R&R locally. I called one authorized shop and was quoted one hour for same reefer swap. We all know there will be some more to it, however hoping it won't require more than another hour or so. Am guessing $200-250 to get it done.

Just received my "last chance" offer from Dometic for an Extended Warranty. Normally I would pass as there are no touch controls, etc., however am probably going to spend the $100 for another year in light of this situation- or maybe two years for $130.

Supposedly the refer cools better on 3 than on the max 5 because those numbers do not represent lower temperature, just longer run times. This was mentioned in another post earlier.

From the manual
5-step LED-Indication for inner temperature selection (5 LEDs =max. Setting)

Our temp follows the number of bars and runs approximately
3 = 36-38 degrees
4 = 32-34 degrees
5 = 28-30 degrees (and I froze the lettuce and am in trouble)

Hard to believe that the fridge would cool better on 3 vs. 5. All I know is on the last two week trip to Sierra, where temps never got above 73 we had to put it on 4 or else it got above 40 degrees.

I would think the manual gives a best case view of performance, however as many know it doesn't perform like that. Don't doubt it could freeze lettuce, however with a lot of nights/miles in our 21 already we've never come close to that, unlike we did with our 3.0 in the 17B.

The higher numbers do correspond to a lower target temperature, but if the refrigerator is unable to reach that temperature it's running as much as it can, and moving to a higher setting won't make it any more effective.

We just spent 4 months in Florida, and for the month of March & April the single door fridge really struggled to stay below 40 degrees, temperatures outside were 80 to 88 degrees.
It frosted up a lot and then the temperature inside the fridge really went up. I had to defrost it often to maintain 38-39 degrees. It really became a hassle.

I am not quite sure how the higher numbers work-- I know the fridge isn't as intelligent about temperature as it could be. But I do know that when i tried setting the fridge back to four bars the interior temperature went above 40. So I kept it on 5 bars. No danger of freezing any lettuce unless it was in the freezer..

Correct. That's also a good indication of the ability of the 2 door we have. In warm ambient temps we kept it at 4 and that resulted in a temp of between 36-37F. At a setting of 5, it dropped to 33-34 in about 16-18 hours. I suppose we'll need a setting of 5 when it's 95F out, but 4 worked fine in 86F.
