I5 southbound shut down past Seattle

Due to an Amtrak train derailment this morning (12/18/17), southbound I5 is completely shut down for an unknown amount of time. It happened just past the Joint Bases, south of Tacoma (which is south of Seattle). Some of the cars fell on the highway.

The detour routes will add lots of time to your route. DOT is advising you don't go near that area. So, if you're picking up your new trailer, please take this into consideration and check for current conditions.

Here's one of the news reports on it:

At least 3 dead, scores injured after Amtrak train plunges off bridge onto I-5 | KOMO

For traffic info, here's the DOT site:

Here's an update as of noon today (12/19/17) from the DOT's site:

"Southbound I-5 is not expected to open before tomorrow morning's commute. We're seeing upwards of 14 miles of backup on the 507 detour and recommend travelers take the SR 16/SR 3 detour.
Five of the 14 rail cars have been moved and crews are working to move the large locomotive this afternoon."

One of the detour routes is through the military base and you don't need special papers/whatever to do so. Heck if I know how exactly they're doing all that as I'm not going anywhere near that area.

Best case scenario is that I5 southbound opens later on Wednesday (12/20). However, they need to assess any roadway damage and make repairs. It's concrete roadway. All of the train cars have been removed - now they just need to clear away debris, repair guardrails, etc.

Looking at all the photos, I'm just amazed there weren't more fatalities.

If I was returning from Chilliwack with my new trailer, I'd head south on I-5 and take the exit for Whidbey Island and the Coupeville Ferry to Port Townsend. Then drive around the Olympic Peninsula, Aberdeen, and Astoria, Oregon. You'd skirt around the train wreck and the mad house traffic around Tacoma and Seattle. Sure its a longer drive .... but BEAUTIFUL!

I wouldn't do the whole peninsula but definitely Port Townsend. But... you need reservations for that route so make them well in advance; they filled up very fast after the train accident on Monday.
