I loved triptiks. Got one for our 2014 trip for pickup. Alas, no longer available. Still remember following them on vacation as a kid.

I like a printed map to give me a sense of where my journey is taking me in relation to the rest of the world, whether it is the drive (hike, bike or paddle too) for the day, or planning the entire journey. GPS, whether built into a vehicle, handheld, or on your phone is much better for finding addresses, and dealing with route changes as you drive. Basically, for me, a printed map comes out at the planning stage, but the GPS is used en route.

Almost all, from Garmin to Google, let you know which lane you need, how far ahead a turn is so you can watch, etc. This can be real handy in areas you are not familiar with.

It is natural for many folks to fight change, but most everything evolves. From our tow vehicles, our trailers, and all the gear we carry, most of it has changed over the years, and mostly for the better. No different that our smart phones and GPS mapping, which are evolving to better serve our needs.

Still in the end, it is really all about just getting out, no matter what technology you may have adopted. Just go and have fun.

I just checked with our AAA online (WA state) and they still offer them. I signed into my account and there was a form where I could list all my destinations and such. And they'll mail it to you when it's done, unless you want to go directly to one of their offices that prints them out (not all of them do).

Maybe it's different in your state than it is here.

I did see an online app as well, but I didn't look at that, so can't give you the details.

I think they are the computerized ones. I was thinking of the old spiral bound flip books. They pulled the pages from various shelves and inserted them in a binder.

My last one was printed out off the computer, but it was bound in the plastic comb thingie like they used to be. Yep, they didn't pull pages out of a bin like they used to. Guess that would cost too much money to keep all those pages in stock.

But, yeah, I loved how certain pages would fold out so you could get more detail of the city you were going by. I used one during a big half cross country trip almost 3 years ago.

But now my (newer than what I had then) GPS will tell me where the next gas station is, unlike my old one. Not sure if it'll tell me where the next rest stop is, which the TripTiks do tell ya.

I still plan on taking paper maps with me when we get traveling in the trailer later this year or next year (depending on when we actually get it). And my atlas.

And to get this back on track with GPS - does anyone know of one that will let you choose which route to take? I know I can set it up for fastest route for miles or time, but I'd like to chose my own route, such as what you can do with Googlemaps when it shows you different routes. That's one thing I hate about the GPS is that I can't chose a different route from what it gives me.

You should be able to enter a way point in your GPS and that would force it to use a route you want.

Sounding dumb here - what's a "way point"? If you mean by the final destination, I already do that. then it gives me the route, but some times I know I want to go another way. So, I start driving that way until it figures out the route I'm taking; until then it keeps trying to redirect me.

A way point is some place on the map that's between you and your destination. So, if you want to go to NYC from Seatac, you might enter Dallas as a way point. Or Fargo ( not sure why you would, but you could ).
I don't know your GPS so you'll have to read the manual.
You may also be able to plan your route on your computer and then plug in the GPS to synch.

Gotcha! Forgot that's what it's called. yeah, I've had to do that but I was hoping someone had made a GPS that would give me a choice of routes like what I can do online. (Yeah, I know, buy a smart phone and the expensive monthly coverage! HA!)

Paper maps keep you from taking dum routes that a GPS will route. I often detour from GPS route and listen to the GPS grumble for a while.

The Garmin Nuvi will sometimes give you a choice of routes. Not always, though; sometimes it seems to think there is only one way to get to where you're going.
