TRIVIA - one of "ten reasons" to go to Death Valley: While flying over the Nellis AFB ranges during Red Flag exercises in the late 70s, I diverted the short distance SW to Death Valley - for the purpose of flying below sea level. Things we do (or have done)!!!

Myron, what a great wordsmith! We loved your description of Quartzsite having gone through ther last year on the way to The Bluebonnet in Texas. We are following your lead to Death Valley leaving in about 4 weeks. We had to print your description so we can retread it when we need a laugh.

That's still pretty hairy soultrek, considering that Death Valley isn't that far below sea level. What were you - like 100 ft agl?

That would have been something amazing to see, at Badwater Basin... soultrek roaring up the valley in an F4 282 feet above sea level. Wow!

Shucks Robert and Myron, I thought my initial comment was going to slip through unnoticed. Not that big of a deal - since 280 feet AGL (above ground) would have put me below sea level at Badwater. I suspect that I was lower than that; we flew segments of our Red Flag simulated combat missions quite close to the ground. I was actually flying helicopters during this exercise, which eased the task. Though, coming clean, I have flown high performance jets on low level sorties VERY close to the ground. That was then - this is now! Cheers…Glenn.

While sitting outside my trailer at La Paz County Park (on the Colorado River near Parker, AZ) I watched an F/A 18 painted Blue Angels colors fly up the Colorado River less than 100' above the water (and about that distance from the trailer). Wish I had my camera in hand. I grabbed it hoping more were on the way, but there was only one...

"Tower, this is Maverick, requesting fly by."

"Negative Maverick, the pattern is full."

Does it anyway.
