I'm cheating because i don't like to shoot through the screens, but here is the rear view at Hole in the Wall Campground at the Mojave National Preserve. A nice campground for $6.00 per night with the Senior Pass. Dry camping with vault toilets & threadless water stations.

Beautiful, Jon! That’s not cheating at all, unless you’re using your ‘water bandit’ on those threadless spigots...

Wow, John, that looks really isolated. Gotta be supplied up before heading in there.

A long way from anywhere, but good Verizon coverage; poor AT&T...

Nice shot, Jon. Especially like the $6 part. So you're in California--- are you planning to stay out west until Quartzsite? I'm trying to sell us on another trip to the Quartzsite Rally by suggesting first in January we go to San Diego (never been) then up the coast to Venice to visit relatives, then ending up at the Q-rally. It's a tough sell, but so much to see there.

Want a picture of me in a blazer and yacht cap holding the Wall Street Journal sitting in a beach chair at the Coronado.

But--nervous about finding decent camping in that corner of California.
Maybe even a dip down to Mexico?

Yea, I'm heading to Joshua Tree tomorrow, then deciding whether to go to Anza Borrego State Park for a bit before heading to either Imperial dam or Quartzsite. I usually switch back & forth between the two over the winter.

This is my first time at Hole in the Wall Campground in the Mojave National Preserve- I recommend it to all (as long as you can deal with dry camping & being 40 miles from anything - They do have a dump station).

Alabama Hills seems to be unrecognized by many, however is a must see....and is free....Mt. Whitney always an awesome sight!

Nearby day trip or camp at 8600' is Ancient Bristlecone with 4,000 year old trees.

Myron, I am sure that you and Nancy would like the San Diego area. You might, however, want to look into where you can stay that is a reasonable price, beforehand. Perhaps some folks here can give you some tips.

Closest we've been to San Diego with a trailer is Visalia -our maiden voyage. Want to see palm trees again but especially the Coronado Hotel. And Pismo Beach. Got two months to map out a trailer camping plan. How hard can it be?

Oh, well, you can just stay at the Coronado! Yes, it's nice to see.

I'm trying to sell a third trip to Baja, probably more difficult. Mex 5 still isn't paved so I may give up on it for Jan. When the roads finally paved it'll be so much easier than Mex. 1 and an easier sell.

It's pretty easy to duck over the border and sample a bit of Mexico but the area nearest the border is pretty touristy.

This year we unexpectedly spent the night in San Diego at the Chula Vista RV place. Most expensive place we've ever stayed at $88.00 a night. Hope you find something more reasonable and good luck selling the trip.

Hey. If we do this trip, even a brief forage across the border would satisfy my bucket list, regardless. Guessing towing the trailer means getting all the paperwork, insurance, dog vaccinations, etc is required. That bums me out. Other option would be dehitch trailer at an RV park and day trip it. Actively searching for reasonable options.

Not much in inexpensive parks that I’ve ever found in that area. There are a number of RV parks on I-8 coming into San Diego, but never priced them. The KOA is very nice and great location to hit Coronado or border on day trips. However, it won’t be inexpensive. We’ve also stayed at Campland on Mission Bay but unless you have kids, wrong environment.
Use to be beach camping on S side of Mission bay that was free or low cost, but I’d worry about security there. If you have military access there is a campground on the base on Coronado, also some commercial ones further S on the island.

Mexican insurance can be purchased by the day. Check Vagabundos for rates. It is more costly by the day. When we get 21 days of insurance it's almost as much as the 6 month policy. But check their rates, how much is it worth to check off a bucket list item?

Another option in the San Diego area, especially if you've traveled during the day and are approaching the area later in the afternoon is to stop in Alpine at the Viejas Casino. Free camping and a pretty good buffet. That lets you get into San Diego early in the morning. Saves at least one night in an expensive place.

Has anyone stayed in San Diego area at either of these two military RV campgrounds?

1. Admiral Baker RV campground, San Diego Naval Station. (open to general public).
2. Fiddlers Cove. (Active, Retired, 100% disabled.)

We have been to Mexico many times, but never with a trailer.....yet!

Our first time was when staying in a hotel in San Diego about 20 years ago when the kids were fairly young. We drove to a parking lot near the border, and walked across to Tijuana. What a culture shock! A cabbie was the first to talk to use offering us a ride into town, which turned out to be a 5 minute walk. Then there were the wee kids with sad, sad faces trying to sell us Chiclets, then being accosted at every last shop and cafe. Our kids kept very close to us. Oh, and the chief of police was assassinated the day we were there.

Suffice it to say that though very interesting, not the best experience. All the other trips were much more pleasant. Sure, there were some folks trying to sell their wares, but nothing like we experienced on our quickly ducking over the border.
