Not just the warranty is an issue. Nikon Canada will not service or repair, even if you are paying. I've been at the service counter overhearing somebody getting turned down.
They won't do any unauthorized repair or alteration. I tried that once.

Seems odd. Yet Nikon in Melville, Long Island New York once refused to do a repair of my 20 year old Nikon F but they said it was only because they didn't carry parts for a camera over 14 years old. That ticked me off. Some years later I had a 1987 Nikon 600mm f/4 with a jammed, cross-threaded lens shade and they (Melville) did make an attempt to unjam it for me. Well, they said they tried, and failed.

Then I once brought them a Nikon 80-200mm AF f/2.8 I took a chance on and bought on eBay that was very broke. They kept it and a $150 deposit for 3 months until finally I called and told 'em to S--- or get off the pot. That motivated Nikon USA to then send me a brand-new-in-the-box lens for my trouble. To be fair I think Melville only wanted to repair (replace) digital circuitry and not do the mechanical stuff. Think they dumped all their pro repair guys and only kept the plug and play guys. Nikon USA is likely more just a franchise front, and not an honest repair shop. That 600mm also needed a new diaphragm, which I got installed at an independent camera repair shop.

B&H is like the Macy's of the electronics and camera world, it is a large place of business in NYC, well worth a visit.

Nikon Canada certainly does - or at least in the past did - real repair work. Our 80-400mm Nikkor lens was dropped, damaging the zoom mechanism. We sent it to Nikon Canada, through a local Nikon dealer, where it was rebuilt... expensively.

Old film bodies are a challenge to get fixed. My old FE (circa 1982) needed a replacement rewind crank handle so my niece could use it; I found only one shop in the entire Ottawa area which would touch it. Fortunately at that location the owner was happy to see a real film camera... he not only replaced the rewind crank (with a salvaged handle and custom-fabricated pin), but fixed the back so it latched and sealed better, and charged very little for the service. In this case, no one cared whether it was purchased from an authorized dealer (although it was).

Nikon Canada does warranty and repair to equipment that was sold by Nikon Canada. If you bought the camera in Japan, they will tell you to send it to Japan.
With 20 photographers at the Sun and Province, we spent a lot of time going to Nikon. We were members of Nikon Professional Services so got priority.

Yes, my lens was legitimately (and recently, at the time) purchased from a Nikon Canada dealer. I was just responding to Myron's experience of not being able to get repair work done, even without a gray-market issue.

Not for nothing, but if there's a Nikon guy out there interested in stealing my 600mm f/4 I am willing to sell it. Manual focus, 14 pounds of ugly, but still a killer. Now too old to be dragging it around. Close-up shots of the ugly parts are available. Tripod and Escape 19 not included.

Another quirk of Nikon Canada is that most repair invoices came back with a notation, "Impact Damage".

A good source for used camera equipment is KEH in Atlanta. I've bought several cameras and lenses from them over the years. They have a good reputation. KEH also repairs camera gear. www.keh.com.

Another vote for B&H. You might also check out Allen's camera. Another excellent resource.
