looking for the ultimate road trip songs
I'll start the ball rolling....
Alan Watts Blues, by Van Morrison (from Poetic Champions Compose).
Gets me going every time (it's hard to drive to work listening to that one). Perfect roadtrip lyrics, excellent melody, and a great piano bit in the middle.
Let's build the ultimate roadtrip playlist for Escapers. Any genre, any song, the only caveat is that it settles your heart into the journey. Anything that creates/sustains/augments/ or otherwise drives wanderlust.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
What can I say.. I tend to like albums over individual songs.. so here's 3 of a different kind.
Quadrophenia (the who) the entire album.. I can listen to it over & over..as the road just goes on..
Also of course another great album Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
oh yeah don't forget the White Album (Beatles)

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
Heading for the Light by the Traveling Wilburys.
We were heading for Princess Louisa Inlet, up the coast , in a mint condition 42 foot classic motor cruiser. The captain asked me to take the helm and then cranked up the stereo and lit a joint. Sky and water blended into one, with a five foot swell. I needed glasses, but I didn't yet know that and every wave seemed to hide a log.
Somebody still sober took over the helm and I retired for a a beer or three. Scariest couple hours I've ever endured since I couldn't see and I was in command.
I should have felt secure. I was in good company. Two of the crew were firefighters, and both were mechanics on their time off. Both had their captain's licenses. Another drove an ambulance and was almost a doctor. He later stepped off the boat, between it and the wharf, to take a pee. This was in January. He spent the entire return trip laying in a bunk and groaning, having consumed a bottle and a half of Scotch the night before.
So, I have to add another tune by the Traveling Wilburys. End of the Line.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
Not sure if this constitutes travel music, but I have a couple friends who make me swear I won't play my Greg Brown albums again. But, for laid back camping, you can't beat Greg and you need some Leon Redbone too.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
Yup. Goodbye Earl gets my vote. I like having music that reflects my surroundings, so when I get into cowboy country, I've got to have Willie and Waylon. Earl would be just perfect for some campgrounds, like Vaseaux Lake where we we awoken at 3am to "ARE WE ALL HAPPY CAMPERS"? The same group went out fishing at 5am.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
Lots of great song ideas there. I am not real fussy, but do prefer some good blues or rock to listen to as the miles fly by.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
Hey! How come none of you fine young gentlemen didn't mention that I am NOT that old? :
Jeff?!!! Glenn?!!!
I could have called for ACDC and unless we talk about a specific band member, they are good for the past 30 years.
Okay, how about some Pink 'So What'.
LOL

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
And, nobody has come up with King of the Road - "trailer for sale or rent" by Roger Miller.
And, it's not road music, but Tacoma Trailer by Leonard Cohen is great for watching the sun set at camp.
No ageism here.

Re: looking for the ultimate road trip songs
I like to listen to some old tunes from back in the day to road trip with. Depeche Mode, The Cure or New Order get the blood pumping and I soon forget about the concerns of the day.
