Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Is that good 2-sided tape? Is there a concern that the tape will hold and not cause a problem to a less than wooden surface? Is Mac Tac generally available?

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

The reference to Mac-Tac was my attempt at humour. It was ( or maybe is ) used as cupboard liner or a cheap surface cover. It didn't stick very well and left residue, like me.

There are various grades of double sided adhesive pads, but I don't know how much is marketing and how much is truth. I've seen stuff labeled as industrial. Not sure what that means, but the assumption is that it is better, so it costs more.

I would feel pretty confident with 3M products. The hooks I bought surely stuck and when I wanted to remove them, and followed the directions, they came off without any damage to the surface. The first time I took one off, I didn't have the directions and damaged the surface.

Make sure you save the package so you have the instructions for removal.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

What I learned today.

Apparently I would not compromise structure by drilling holes in the cabinet above the wardrobe ( the material is 1/8" oak). It's the cabinets above the sink in the 17B where it could create a problem. And, that would seem to solve the issue, but still thinking...I'm going to proceed with placing the instruments in 1 x 4 piece of oak and mount that.
My reasoning is that should an instrument fail, would I be able to get a matching replacement? One that fits in a 2 1/2 inch hole? And my experience with brass finishes is that they become tarnished or pitted over time. I don't want to have to deal with permanent holes in the cabinet at some later date.

If I was starting over, I'd first visit a few marine supply stores and see what I could get off the shelf. More costly to be sure.

A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Asking me to swim is like asking a dolphin to run a marathon.

Daughter's boy-toy just brought the mount for the instruments, after he cut it to size, routed it and sanded it down with 600 grit paper. As she said, "he's a perfectionist". While we were admiring it, the damn beagle was gobbling his dinner which he'd momentarily left unattended.

I'm hoping tomorrow to get the mount to the wood shop so the holes can be drilled, assuming that work doesn't get in the way of my chores.

Of course, I'll post pictures as soon as it's done. As long as work doesn't get in the way.

Yup, but the hygrometer is useful for monitoring moisture in the trailer over the winter. Temp guage will help with setting the thermostat. Not sure how helpful a barometer is. Nothing you can do about the weather.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Holes drilled. I'm just sticking it up with tape in different locations to see where I want it.

In the pic it doesn't look centred in the panel because of the camera angle, but it is.

I was advised to stain it a different color, but I kinda like it the way it is, with a couple coats of satin varathane. I think having the grain running at 90 degrees is enough separation.
