It looks like there is a short hinged section that slips under the seat cushions to support the bottom edge of the vertical gate wall. The photo is a view from top looking down onto the plywood bench.

As John said, 2nd pic shows the hinges that allow the sides to fold flat for storing under the dinette cushions. The "wings" were sized to allow access for the storage space below the cushions without having to remove them.
