Speaks to my point exactly Steve. The regulations on the brass fittings are meaningless feel-good rules IMHO.

Changes in how we do things are coming and I do not fault California for leading the way.
The lead piping in our water system is a hazard and has not been replaced simply because of
COST. Our domestic potable water system is buried 8 to 10 ft in the ground to get below the frost line so digging it up is very expensive . I worked at a plant that made oils for oil based paint and stain right up to the time that California put limits on VOC' s and decided "Everything Causes Cancer " . . California is too large of a market to be ignored and often sets the standard.. Some one has to lead and most states are unfortunately reluctant followers.

Mike, no worries, you were talking about water, not politics. Besides, I love thread drift, into anything but politics..... Anybody had any good poutine lately?

My problem bathroom fitting acted up again yesterday. This time it came loose while I was away from the trailer. I am currently dry camping, and the water pump cheerfully pumped my fresh water tank dry, into the gray water tank via the bathroom floor. I heard the odd sound when I returned to the trailer and knew right away there was a problem.
So there are two lessons learned here: (1) use a pressure regulator when hooked to city water and (2) when dry camping, turn off that water pump when you leave the trailer. I bet I forget this right away. Arrgh.

Yep, but this time I missed the Ka-bloosh! I could hear a glug-glug-glug sound coming from the trailer as I walked up to it; by then the pump had already pumped the water tank dry. Good thing the grey water tank was relatively empty before this happened, or I would have had a mess.

Yeah, turning off the pump when it's not in use - important.

No, I'm on the Oregon coast, a long way from home. Didn't mean to be gone this long, but... here I am. Right now it looks like I'll start heading home next month.

Pressure regulators
We camped at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington on our way to and from Townsend this past
Spring. As I hooked up my water to the camp ground hydrant and began to open the valve, the fellow camped next to me called out and asked me if I had a good regulator on the water. I did not. He said there's between 100 and 120 lbs pressure in this system. I closed the valve in time with no damage. I went ahead and filled my tank with the external fill spout. He showed me his Watts regulator setup.
When we got home I made up a similar setup which I have promised myself I will use everywhere from now on. I put it on even though the line pressure may only be 30 or 40 lbs. you don't know when the pressure could Jump dangerously high. 3/4 inch watts regulator adjustable from 25 to 75 psi
Preset at 50 lbs and a watts gauge.
Dave

I bought mine here. I bought the $89 one which seems kind of expensive but after going through several of the cheap ones I have had this one for several years and like that I always know the pressure at a glance. Comes with all the connecting fittings ready to go.

I assume that's their X65BG (with dry gauge). I use an equivalent from Valterra widely available at RV stores, and a bit cheaper.
I like both knowing the pressure (so I can tell what's going on if there are any problems) and being able to set the pressure to be what I need.

The build sheet says a water pressure regulator is included in the starter kit. Will this do the job or is something better needed? Loren

The inexpensive water pressure regulator has worked for me for seven years, and I never knew I was missing something by not knowing precisely what the water pressure was. What do I do with that information?

Probably, yes. I have had a few of these (plastic, brass, two or three brands), and found that some of them have excessively restricted the flow, or even got into a oscillation (juddering).

I use it - to confirm that the pressure into the RV in't unreasonably high,
- to eliminate low pressure as the problem if there's a lack of water flow in the RV, and
- to change the adjustment to reach the pressure which worked in the past.
The fixed regulators usually claim to provide 45 psi. Whether they do or not, it's not enough for proper flow in my motorhome's plumbing, but worked okay (when they were working at all) with the more direct plumbing of my small trailer.
If a simple non-adjustable regulator without a gauge works well for you, I don't see any reason to get something else.
