Jim, yes, saying "brake lights on" is short-hand, and not very accurate. You are correct that "TV brakes applied" is better wording.

The brake controller only applies trailer brakes if the TV's brake lights are on? I didn't know...

I'm not using a 4 cylinder, but I would be happy to do so with a 3500lb trailer.

I assume that the manufacturers have done due diligence, and if they say the truck can pull a 3500lb trailer, then...
