before it (apparently) became standard, I think this switch was only included in trailers which had the battery (or batteries) mounted inside the body. With more accessible outside...

Yes, it is usually referred to as the "battery shut off" or "battery disconnect" switch, which is what to look for when searching for past discussions. It's a small toggle switch, not the big switch...
