You can buy a small roll of 3M red #35 marking tape to mark which wires are positive. The tape is cheap and is weather proof .

I would plan on replacing your solar controller . The combination of an arcing fault and overheating is seldom good for electronics or terminals . Most likely the wire terminals were never tightened...
